Summary
WhenDeadpool & Wolverinefinally hit theaters it made quite a mark in the MCU. It checked off quite a few boxes for fans waiting years to see. That of course, included Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in an MCU film. And, of course, seeing Wolverine in his comic-accurate outfit. It wasn’t just special for the fans either. There were reports when the movie was being made that people on the set were getting emotional because of the things that were being seen and done for the first time in this kind of flick.
It certainly makes sense that there is talk of aDeadpool & Wolverinesequel. The movie might not havealways been a critical hit, but the fans of the MCU absolutely loved it, and few movies have evermade the kind of moneythis movie did. The attraction to make a second film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is obviously strong. But it would be great if Marvel decided it didn’t need to cash in just this one time. This one time, it could decide that there are plenty of other money-making ventures it could undertake. And there are plenty of other movies that could feature Deadpool or Wolverine or both without trying to get what made the first “buddy cop” movie featuring the two characters so fun and so special.
Not Everything Needs a Sequel
There are a couple of different reasons whyDeadpool & Wolverinewereso beloved by mostof the MCU’s fans. The first is that both Ryan Reynolds in the real world and Deadpool in his cinematic one talked an awful lot about being in an X-Men movie since the firstDeadpoolfilm hit theaters. As the trailer forDeadpool 3said, Wolverine is the X-Man. People wanted to see him back, especially after some of the final movies that saw Jackman play the character were less than beloved.

Therewere also all the cameosfrom other characters from Marvel comic movies that weren’t part of the MCU or in the form of Channing Tatum’s Gambit, which were never in a movie or TV show until this one hit theaters. It was a blast to see Jennifer Garner’s Elektra fighting alongside X-23, Blade, and the aforementioned Gambit. It was fan service, but it was a kind of fan service. It’s just like Chris Evans' Johnny Storm getting offed in the absolute craziest way.
Even ifWolverine & Deadpool 2followed that formula, maybe especially if it followed the formula of the first film, not only would it make the sequel less fun, but it would water down the first film. It wouldmake everything less specialbecause it was clear this wasn’t a one-off but was in fact what Marvel has planned for this IP. It doesn’t seem like Marvel would want to do this. But at the end of the day, the company is after money and there’s a chance it would be commercially lucrative, even if it just felt like a do over. That is in fact, why a Deadpool & Wolverine 2 is almost certainly coming at some point. While not every movie needs a sequel, while there is something alluring about trying to wring every last dollar out of a property by these big companies, they should fight the pull to do it here.
Deadpool and Wolverine Need To Go Their Separate Ways
While it feels likely that Marvelenjoys the buddy cop vibeofDeadpool & Wolverine, it really seems like the company would be doing itself and the fans a favor if it actually made these kinds of sequels less often. There are many, many, many stories to tell that were birthed in Marvel comics about both of these characters. Limiting either one of them to seemingly always appearing alongside one another isn’t doing the IP any favors.
There are Marvel fans out therewho don’t love Ryan Reynolds, maybe even some who went to Deadpool & Wolverine almost exclusively to see Hugh Jackman reprise his popular role. Maybe they even were happy to see Wolverine constantly ripping on Deadpool. And those fans would absolutely love to see Wolverine do something separate from Deadpool. Even different than the X-Men movie everyone wants to see.
Not every single IP has to be drained of all its fun and its originality. There is plenty of story ideas out there that don’t require a sequel toDeadpool & Wolverine. Staying away from this particular IP would keep this installment special and unique and Marvel could still make a ton of money by using the characters in other stories as the MCU moves forward.
Deadpool & Wolverine marks Ryan Reynolds’s take on the Merc with a Mouth’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Together, the two embark on a universe-hopping, R-rated adventure that’s sure to change the MCU forever.
