Summary

The first three mainlineGod of Wargames could be getting remastered, according to recent rumors. The extent of these possible remasters is unclear at this time, and they probably wouldn’t see an overhaul onthe level of the NorseGod of Warsaga, but there’s certainly still potential for Sony to do some cool, unexpected things with them.

Of course, the most obvious changes that these rumored remasters could implement would be in the realms of visual fidelity and technical capability. Putting the olderGod of Wargames on PS5 would open the door to more advanced VFX, higher resolutions, and better, more consistent FPS, in addition to modern graphical features like detailed textures and greater draw distance. But a more difficult and interesting question to consider is how such remasters could actually alter the gameplay or even the stories of these classic games: perhaps they could add weapons or alternate control schemes, or even new cutscenes and dialog, fleshing out the mechanical and narrative elements found in the original releases. Naturally, these sorts of changes are far more ambitious and could be misguided, but there’s at least one way that such new content could benefit the original trilogy, and theGod of Warseries as a whole.

God of War Kratos back turned with Norse background

The rumor about theclassicGod of Wargames getting remasteredwas sparked by Lunatic Ignus on Twitter, who claimed that developer Nixxes would be working on them, rather than Santa Monica Studios.

It’s Still Unclear How Kratos Wound Up in Scandinavia

Afterthe bombastic events ofGod of War 3, Kratos seemingly sacrifices himself with the Blade of Olympus, plunging it deep into his torso. But a post-credits scene shows a trail of blood leading from where Kratos “died” to the edge of the platform he was on, strongly implying his survival. Of course, audiences would get confirmation that he survived throughGod of Warin 2018, but the game doesn’t linger too long on any particular explanation for this.

Kratos' much-discussed mythology-hopping is mostly left up to interpretation, as the intervening years between his showdown in Greece and his new life in Scandinavia are only illuminated within the context of his relationships with Faye and Atreus. In some ways, this is fitting, as the new era ofGod of Waris meant to be a fresh start for Kratos, and it’s not too hard to suspend disbelief about his mythological shift. But still, there’s value in the prospect of clearing up this unexplained gap.

Showing players how Kratos wound up in Scandinavia would be interesting and valuable, even if it were just a cursory glance. For instance, maybe a new post-credits scene could depict a wounded Kratos dragging himself through Europe, illustrating how he contended with his ostensibly mortal wound from the Blade of Olympus. Alternatively, or additionally,God of War’s complicated timelinecould be cleared up by showing Kratos actually arriving in the Norse lands, as this would establish the length of his stay in this new region—there’s in-game evidence suggesting it could have been north of 100 years before the start of 2018’sGod of War.

But anything beyond these hypothetical scenes, or maybe some other small Easter eggs, could be a bridge too far. There’s acertain mystique to theGod of Warfranchisethat not only makes it more interesting, but actually holds the story together: going too in-depth about the relationship between the series' renditions of Norse and Greek mythology would mean confronting various contradictions, like coexisting creation myths, which may not be easily reconciled. To avoid these messy problems, a good degree of ambiguity should remain intact.
