There isn’t much known aboutPokemon Legends: Z-Aat the moment. When Game Freak announced theLegends: Arceussuccessor in a Pokemon Presents earlier this year, the only thing it showed off was a 2-minute CGI trailer. The developer did, at the very least, reveal thatPokemon Legends: Z-A, which is set to release in 2025, would feature the return of the Mega Evolution mechanic and take place entirely within Kalos’s Lumiose City, the France-inspired region that served as the primary setting for the 2013 3DS titlesPokemon XandY. With that being said, this is pretty much the extent of the information that’s been confirmed aboutLegends: Z-A. Well, officiallyconfirmed, at least.
On July 24, 2025, more than a terabyte of confidential files were stolen from Game Freak’s servers and uploaded on the internet for everyone to see. All sorts of data, from employees' personal information and video game source codes to early development builds and canceled remakes, were leaked online. Among the data revealed in this “Teraleak,” as fans called it, were a few as-of-yet unannounced details regardingPokemon Legends: Z-A. Perhaps the most significant thing about the game that these leaked documents revealed is thatit will reportedly feature at least two new Mega Evolutions, one for Zygarde and one for Zeraora. Assuming these plans aren’t scrapped, then Mega Zeraora will be one of the first Pokemon types of its kind in thePokemoncanon.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Rumored Mega Zeraora May Be One of the First Mega Evolutions of Its Kind
Zeraora is an Electric-Type Mythical Pokemon That First Appeared in Generation 7
The Electric-type Pokemon Zeraora has a couple of unique characteristics. Unlike most of the other Pokemon in the series, it wasn’t introduced at the start of a generation. Instead,Zeraora made its debut inPokemon Ultra SunandUltra Moon, the enhanced editions of 2017’sPokemon SunandMoon. In the game’s Pokedex, Zeraora is referred to as the Thunderclap Pokemon, presumably because it can create lightning when it runs. This quick-footed, yellow-and-black Pokemon is not part of an evolutionary chain; in other words, it cannot evolve from or into anything else. This is because Zeraora is a Mythical Pokemon.
Mythical Pokemon are Incredibly Rare, and Only One of Them Has a Mega Evolution
Mythical Pokemon, for those who don’t know, is a class of Pokemon that are incredibly rare. These pocket monsters are so hard to find in thePokemonworld that their existence is often questioned. Mythical Pokemon have been around since the series' very first installment,Pokemon RedandBlue. The Psychic-type Mew is considereda Mythical Pokemonin that game. So far, 23 more Pokemon of this type have been introduced to the franchise. Arceus, Meloetta, Darkrai, Shaymin, Zarude, and Pecharunt, for instance, are all classified as Mythical Pokemon. Like Zeraora, none of them can evolve into any other Pokemon, save for Meltan.
Out of all the Mythical Pokemon out there, only a single one is capable of Mega Evolution. The Pokemon in question is, of course, Diancie. This Rock/Fairy-type monster made its first appearance inPokemon XandY, the same set of games that the Mega Evolution mechanic was initially introduced in.Mega Diancie is a considerably more powerful versionof its original counterpart, since it boasts higher attack stats. Diancie may not have the best Mega Evolution form in all ofPokemon XandY, but it is still pretty solid for what it is.
Zeraora May Join Diancie in Being a Mythical Pokemon With a Mega Evolution
IfPokemon Legends: Z-Areally does feature a Mega Zeraora, then the Electric-type Mythical Pokemon will be the second of its type to receive a Mega Evolution form, following Diancie. Zeraora is native to the Alola region, so it’ll be interesting to see why it’s present in Lumiose City and why it, of all Pokemon, is capable of Mega Evolution. Maybe Game Freak will make Zeraora a very significant part ofPokemon Legends: Z-A’s plot, but that is just pure speculation.
