Summary
Marvel fans have various speculations linking Mephisto to the events inWandaVision. Finally, the writers behind its spinoff,Agatha All Along, dropped the name of the ancient extradimensional demon.
Mephisto has yet to be featured in theMarvel Cinematic Universe(MCU). However, the demon god has been involved in various theories, with some claiming that he was involved in what happened inWandaVision. One theory suggests that Mephisto, the Devil in MCU, manipulated a grieving Wanda Maximoff into creating “The Hex.” When inside the Hex, one’s life is transformed into a sitcom reality. Wanda’s reality in Westview was tied to dark and supernatural forces. Also, Mephisto deals with desperate individuals and manipulates reality; hence, many suspected he was involved in the Westview Anomaly. The writers are aware of those types of theories and acknowledge them in theWandaVisionspinoffAgatha All Along.
In the third episode ofAgatha All Along, titled “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials,” the members of Agatha’s coven discussed their thoughts on what possibly happened to her son, Nicholas Scratch. One mentioned that he could be “an agent of Mephisto.” For the first time, the Marvel Devil’s name was dropped. Series creator Jac Schaeffer was asked in an interview withGames Radarif the move was a “nod and wink” to the previous Mephisto theories that he was prowling in Wanda’s world. Schaeffer admitted that it was indeed the case. “That was a nod, definitely, yes,” the director said.
The filmmaker also added that they considered the various theories from fans when developing the show. Although they already have an idea of how to run the series, Schaeffer reads the discussions online to have an idea of what interests the audience. In the first place, they would not have the spinoff focusing on the powerful witch Agatha without the positive reception ofKathryn Hahn’s character fromWandaVision. Her exaggerated facial expressions, including the excessive winks, were so fun that some of her scenes went viral. Without the fans' love and support for Agnes inWandaVision, there would be noAgatha All Along.
Yes, it made sense why the series creators and writers listen to Marvel fans. The latter has made a huge contribution to the success ofWandaVisionand the birth of itsspinoffs like the Vision seriesandAgatha All Along. For sure, fans were thrilled to see evidence of their theories on the show. Also, it’s easy to tie Mephisto toWandaVisiondue to Wanda’s vulnerable state after losing Vision. Her grief and trauma had probably drawn her into a deal with the Devil. Although the theories linking Mephisto to the events inWandaVisionmade sense, he didn’t appear in the series. However, he could potentially appear in the spinoffs. When it was revealed that Agnes was Agatha, there were theories that she probably worked for Mephisto. InMarvel Comics, Agatha and Mephisto have a complex history and aren’t directly connected. However, both are involved in Wanda. That’s why when Agnes manipulated Wanda, some fans thought it was part of Mephisto’s bigger plan.
