Collectibles in narrative games give some players the motivation they need to look around every corner and interact with everything they can findfor the best experience.Life Is Strange: Double Exposureaccomplishes this with the use of Polaroids. Polaroids can be found lying around and, when approached, will display a prompt.
Players will not need to worry about finding any of these Polaroids in the first location they find themselves in, but this all changes during the first scene transition of the game.
Polaroid #1 - Reggie and Diamond
Players will start in an abandoned building that Max is scoping out alongside her friend Safi. Players can safely navigate this area without fear of overlooking any Polaroids. However, the first one they can pick up will be available once the scene transitions to the bar. Once they gain control of Max, they will want to turn the game’s camera to the left. This bar will be where players can get their first taste of just how much a simple choice can press the narrative for future events.
Here they will see several stylish murals painted on the walls of the bar. Head towards the Pirate mural painted on the far wall, and they will find a coffee table with a Go set on it. Turn the camera to the right, and they will see an exit door for the bar. To the left of this will be the first Polaroid.
The picture is of Reggie and Diamond, two of the bar’s patrons that players can interact with near the start of the scene. You do not need to speak with them, but it is encouraged that players interact with every aspect of the game to get the most lore they can — as this will help them feel the most invested in the game’s story.
Polaroid #2 - Snowman
Max,Safi, and Moseswill all be on the roof, where you will be able to get Safi to reveal some information she is hiding. After this scene, Max will head to the bottom of the building. At the start of this scene, you will see a streetlight in the distance, with a headless snowman in the light.
Head over to this headless snowman and then follow the shoveled path. Keep going straight, and you will come to a fork in the path. Take the left path and a prompt will show the second Polaroid when you get near it. This Polaroid will be of the snowman from earlier before it lost its head.
Polaroid #3 - Turn Plushie
Max will get a message from Amanda saying, “That’s it Max. I’m coming over”, which will cause Max to want to tidy up her room. After this cutscene, players will take control of Max. Players will actually be able to see the exact position of the Polaroid, as it is next to the telescope on the opposite side of the house. Players will see some stairs in front of them, and they can run down and head to the table on the left of this telescope.
The image of this Polaroid is a small-stuffed toy that has been ripped in half. This will be the last Polaroid for Chapter 1, but there are still more scenes until the end of the chapter where players can compare their choices with others. This will be where they can see how hard othersstruggled with the game’s choices.
