With the remake ofUntil Dawnhere, the beloved cinematic horror title is back in a brand-new light. Not only is a fresh version of the game available, but this remake ofUntil Dawnfeatures two post-credit scenes that completely change the narrative of the original game. These updated post-credit moments leave the story on a cliffhanger that has quickly ignited rumors of anUntil Dawn 2in the works.
The two scenes revolve around Josh and Sam. In the original game, Josh’s outcome isn’t good. He eventually faces the same fate that his sister did and becomes a Wendigo. This time around, an end-credits scene reveals that Josh survives, leaving some hope for the character. Also in the remake, Sam is shown years later living alone and suffering from what is likely PTSD. It was known thattheUntil Dawnremake would make some changes to the original, but both end-credits scenes are the biggest twists overall. Now that anUntil Dawnsequel may be on the horizon, this puts a follow-up chapter in a tricky situation.
A Second Until Dawn Game May Have Trouble Feeling Special
Trying to Recapture the Uniqueness Of Its Predecessor
WhenUntil Dawnarrived on the scene back in 2015, it felt like something completely fresh at the time. Presented as somewhat of an interactive movie,Until Dawnhonored the tropes of angsty teenage horror storiesthat have permeated pop culture for decades. Getting to see this subgenre brought to life in a video game was an exciting change of pace for horror games, and its success clearly inspired Supermassive Games to continue the novelty.Until Dawnspawned a variety of similar titles that presented its stories as interactive movies, giving rise to what is now known as theDark Picturesanthology. With this style of storytelling being far from new now, anotherUntil Dawngame may struggle to feel like an exciting experience.
Supermassive Games That Followed Until Dawn’s Success
ExcludingThe Quarry, all of the above games listed have been part oftheDark Picturesanthology.Until Dawngave rise to a fun, although imperfect, horror series. Despite the success of these games, the novelty has worn off, which could make anUntil Dawnsequel lack the special quality that the original brought to the table. The fact that a character could die at any moment really offered an exciting and new sense of tension to players, and all of its follow-ups haven’t quite struck the same chord. TheDark Picturesroster offers plenty of fun, and sometimes shocking, moments, but none of them have reached the same heights ofUntil Dawn. Therefore, a sequel would likely fall into the same boat.
The prospect ofa potentialUntil Dawn 2is surprising. Supermassive Games' hit horror story has become a bit of a cult classic, even if it isn’t a full decade old yet. Developer Ballistic Moon, who developed the remake, has already made bold changes to its camera angle and lighting differences, but a wide open ending has been a shock for most players.
If Until Dawn 2 Happens, It Can Hopefully Stick the Landing
These two open endings raise plenty of questions about whether actors Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek may come back and reprisetheir roles as Sam and Josh. There is also no telling where a sequel’s story could go. SinceUntil Dawnhas 256 variations to its ending depending on who lives and dies, a sequel would have to make some tough choices about which deaths are canon.
IfUntil Dawn 2is confirmed, it can hopefully stick the landing thatthe Dark Pictures chaptershave been trying so hard to achieve. A sequel may not be necessary, but it will definitely be intriguing.
