Summary
Developer Mundfish has shared screenshots of the third DLC for its post-apocalyptic first-person shooter,Atomic Heart. The game, set in an alternate history 1950s Soviet Union, tells the story of Major Sergey “P-3” Nechayev. The World War 2 veteran has lost his memory and wakes up in a fallen utopia overrun with homicidal robots.Atomic Heartreceived predominantly positive reviews when it was released in February 2023, despite technical issues, and won awards for its graphics, setting, and overall gameplay.
The developers promised three DLCs forAtomic Heart, and the first,Annihilation Instinct, was released six months after the game launched. It recounts events after the main game, following P-3 as he explores a new area, The Mendeleev Complex.Atomic Heart’s AnnihilationInstinctDLCalso introduced enemy types and weapons, as well as a new ability that can slow down time.
A first look at the third DLC was shared by Mundfish on social media in September 2024, revealing that it would return players toAtomic Heart’s Chelomey Complex, though perhaps not quite as they remember. Two screenshots were also posted on Twitter on October 31, showing that there may be more swimming through rooms filled with polymer and perhaps another venture underground in the game’s next DLC.
When and Where Does Atomic Heart’s 3rd DLC Take Place?
It’s unclear when precisely this next bit of content for the first-person shooter takes place, nor whether players will be reunited with Major P-3 and his crispy critters. However, given the rundown condition of the Chelomey Complex, it seems certain that it takes place after the events ofAtomic Heart. The teaser trailer also didn’t reveal much, other than that there is at least one new enemy type, which is to be expected. In addition to Chelomey, however, the video description revealed that there will also be more locations to explore in the game’s third DLC.
For its part,Atomic Heart’s second DLC,Trapped in Limbo, did not let players revisit Facility 3826. It instead sucked them back into the eponymous Limbo, a place that defies all logic and physics. Rather than first-person shooting robots, P-3 found himself sliding along platforms through surrealist landscapes, stuck within his mind and searching for lost memories.
The strange side-jaunt into Limbo aside, for many players,Atomic Heartscratched that itch thatBioShockhas left unsoothed for many years.BioShock 4was announced all the way back in 2019, and fans were excited to dive back into a dystopian alternate history of the 1940s and 50s. However, info about the upcoming game being developed by Cloud Chamber has been sparse, and hopefully the nextAtomic HeartDLC will continue to satiate at least some gamers while they wait for another foray intoBioShock’s dark and retrofuturistic setting.
