Summary
ABatmanvillain solo movie was rumored to be in development at DC Studios, but James Gunn debunked the reports. However, the DC Universe boss admitted the rumored project was a good idea.
Batmanis expected to play a significant role in Gunn’s forthcoming DC Universe franchise, with a feature film titledThe Brave and Boldbeing among the many titles announced when Gunn unveiled his initial slate of projects. Of course, director Matt Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson will continuetheir separateThe Batmancinematic universe, with the potential for several spinoff projects similar to Colin Farrell’sThe PenguinTV series. Naturally, Gunn has had to debunk several rumors regarding projects for both the DC Universe and The Batman Crime Saga, and the latest involves one of the Caped Crusader’s most iconic adversaries: Mr. Freeze.
ComicBookClubLivereported in late September that a movie titledMister Freezewas listed on Production Weekly. According to the listing, the purported project was coming from Reeves' 6th & Idaho production company, with Reeves, Gunn, andDC Studios co-CEO Peter Safranlisted as producers alongside DC Studios, DC Entertainment, The Safran Company, and Warner Bros. Television. Because Production Weekly allegedly doesn’t always vet its listings, ComicBookClubLive advised fans to take the news with a grain of salt. So, one fan decided to share the report with Gunn on Threads and verify its accuracy with the man himself. In response,Gunnwrote:
It’s not a bad idea, so I wouldn’t say never but no there’s no truth to it at all.
Roughly a day earlier, Gunn had already responded to a different fan who inquired about the same Mr. Freeze report. Gunn debunked the rumor and advised fans to be cautious about DCU information until he or Safran confirms it. “I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week. Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren’t true at all,” he wrote. “If it’s fun for you to follow the unknowns, follow them, but don’t trust anything completely until you hear it from me or Peter (who is not online despite me seeing him tagged in stuff.)”
Gunn has become accustomed to disproving rumors, as seen when he debunked aSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowcasting rumorclaiming a voice actor was being sought for Krypto the Superdog. However, he previously noted that sometimes inaccurate information isn’t always intentional, as scoopers can be given bad information from a seemingly sound source.
WithGunn’sSupermanless than a year awayfrom launching the DC Universe–the animated seriesCreature Commandoespremieres first but Gunn has stated thatSupermanis the true beginning of the DCU–the rumor mill isn’t likely to slow down. Gunn seemingly recognizes that rumors are fun for fans, but they should temper expectations whenever they read about a potential project that excites them.
