Shonen anime is typically interested in battles, power levels, and goofy gags. But, another staple ofshonen is the romantic element, or at least the hint of one between the protagonist and whoever is serving as best girl.

Fairy Tail is no different, but even goes a bit further in playing around with the romantic lives of several of the large cast involved in the show. Some of the couples are locked in with no misunderstanding whatsoever, while some of the other couples might need a bit of speculation. Who is the best couple? Well, there are a ‘couple’ of top contenders.

State

Alive

Bisca and Alzack are both veteran members of Fairy Tail and are the most stable couple in the series. In fact, they even get married and have a child together which the other members of Fairy Tail meet when they return fromTenrou Island.

While a great and stable couple, they will rank low on a list of best couples as there is little emotional investment in their relationship. Alzack and Bisca have been together from the off, meaning that fans didn’t really get to experience all the things that brought them together in the first place. That said, the two clearly love each other and are determined to raise a happy, healthy child together.

Dating (heavily implied)

Evergreen is a member of the Thunder God Tribe along with Fried and Bickslow. They originally started out as villains, but have become friendlier in the show. While Evergreen is somewhat vain and very concerned with her looks, Elfman is more of the meathead who is obsessed with his masculinity.

They make anunlikely pair, but a cute one nonetheless. While they are a great couple, it is a little unfortunate that fans do not get enough development of that relationship for it to really be one of the top ones.

Deceased

Zeref is one of themajor antagonistsof the Fairy Tail story and Mavis is the genius first master of the Fairy Tail Guild. While it might seem impossible for such a pair to form a couple, that is exactly what happened.

Zeref and Mavis deeply care for each other with a bond strengthened by their shared suffering. The two have been through so much, and it hits even harder when it is revealed that the two could not possibly be together in this world. They would eventually bring an end to each other with the viewer left to imagine what could have been. Maybe they will find happiness together in the great beyond.

Someday, hopefully

Fairy Tail is such that the story of the show is told from Lucy’s point of view. Sure, Natsu is the protagonist, but is not the storyteller. The pair have gotten along really well from the very first episode and that relationship has deepened with all the adventures they went on together.

While this could be the best relationship in the series, the problem is they aren’t quite an item yet as there has been no real declaration and what everyone has gotten so far are hints (big hints) that the two could be a thing. But, no one can forgethow angry Natsu getswhen someone does something to Lucy.

It’s complicated

Erza Scarlet and Jellal Fernandez look like they belong together. Another couple that isn’t strictly official but with all the hints pointing towards it. The two form something of apower couple, as they are two of the most powerful wizards in the entire show and both have the feats to back it up.

The shared trauma of childhood for the two is another point they co-own, with their bitter experiences going a long way to formulating the kind of people they are. At heart, Erza and Jellal are two broken souls who are finding healing in the causes they fight for and the friends they have accumulated. They deserve a shot at happiness.

If Gajeel and Levy are ever to tell their love story to their kids, it will be hard to talk about their first meeting. This is because it involved Gajeel beating up Levy along with two of her friends and leaving them strung up and unconscious. Many never move past that, but Levy did, putting up no real objection when Gajeel joined Fairy Tail and accepting him as guild member.

It is a testament to Gajeel’s growth that many fans were also able to look past Gajeel’s past and support his relationship with Levy as the two slowly started to fall for one another. The extent of their feelings is brought to bear in the fight against Bloodman where Gajeel ‘dies’ and confesses his love for Levy, one of the most moving moments in Fairy Tail for sure.

Juvia was originally a mage with Phantom Lord before joining Fairy Tail along with Gajeel. She fell in love with Gray immediately she locked eyes on him and has been obsessed with the ice mage ever since.

Fortunately, this is not a one-sided love as Gray is also into Juvia especially when his rival, Lyon, also declared an interest in her. Gray and Juvia are agreat couplefor several reasons. For one, their aesthetics match as the idea of a ice mage with a water mage is complimentary. They also happen to fight really well together and their battle against Invel when both stabbed themselves rather than fight the other is a standout moment in Fairy Tail.
