Purgatory is an open-sandbox game that offers players quite a lot of freedom in how they play. In this mode, players will jump into Rebirth Island’s variant Hellspawn, where they can complete objectives,grind for camos, and survive through the Torment Levels, all while battling other players and Mercenaries. The mode can be a lot of fun, but here are some Purgatory tips to help those diving into the mode for the first time.
1Choose The Best Loadout For The Job

Unlike other modes inWarzone, players diving into Purgatory will be granted access to their Custom Loadouts right from the get-go, putting more emphasis on selectingthe best weapons available inWarzone. There are a plethora of options players can choose from when it comes to solid weapons for beating the competition, but since Purgatory takes place on a variant of Rebirth Island,high-handling weapons like Submachine Guns and Assault Riflestend to be the most favored.
Whether it’sthe fast-firingBAL-27or the heavy-hittingSTG44, both choices in the Assault Rifle category are solid picks. Other options, like theBP50andMCW, also shine thanks to their versatility. In the Submachine Gun category, standout choices include theFJX Horus, theStatic-HV, and other options like theStriker. While these options are definitely meta, long-range weapons are not completely out of the question, with solid choices like theKAR 98KandtheDTIR 30-06providing niche value for gunning opponents down from afar.
2Increase Your Torment Level

One of the more intriguing aspects of Purgatory is the unique challenge players can face by increasing their Torment Level within the mode. The Torment Level is a unique Purgatory mechanic,increasingas players eliminate other Operators, Mercenaries, and Zombies. A player’s Torment Level can be tracked by the white skulls that appear just below the minimap, and players can reach up to five levels during their life — though their progress will be reset once they die.The higher the Torment Level, the more XP players will gain by eliminating enemies, a great benefit for those looking to rank up fast inWarzone. However, this benefit doesn’t come without drawbacks.
As players increase their Torment Level, they begin to draw more attention, as they will bemarked in red for others to see. Enemy combatants will also be attracted to high Torment Level players, culminating in beingtargeted by an Attack Helicopteronce they reach Torment Level 5. Aside from the increased attention and improved XP gain, reaching Torment Levels also grants a hidden Weapon Blueprint. Players canearn the Gore Cannon by surviving at Torment Level 5for five minutes, making it a challenging yet rewarding achievement.
3Use Portals & Jump Pads To Your Advantage
Portals & Jump Pads Offer Fast Travel
While Purgatory does include vehicles, some players may be looking for a more stylish way to traverse the map quickly. This is where Purgatory’s unique Jump Pads and Portals come in, allowing players to make quick rotations, either to get the jump on enemies or avoid being eliminated and having their Torment Level reset. There are a range of Jump Pads around the map that can launch players into the sky in a flash.Jump Pads are a great way to quickly cover the distance between Operators, making them ideal ways of travel. However, Portals are also quite useful.
While Portals aren’t as widespread across the Hellspawn island as Jump Pads, they do allow players to travel much further. These red orb-like structures are marked on the map for all to see and willteleport any player who enters them into the sky, making them an ideal way to quickly rotate around the island. Additionally, using 15 Portals during the Purgatory Event will also grant players the Supportive Gesture Weapon Charm, a nice cosmetic addition to any player’s arsenal.
4Loot Scare Packages & Supply Crates
Supply Crates & Scare Packages Hold Powerful Blueprints and Mutations
Purgatory grants players immediateaccess to their Custom Loadoutsfrom the start, which may deter some from looting. However, there is some great loot exclusive to the Purgatory mode that players can acquire to better get ahead of the competition. First up is aselection of powerful pro-inspired weapon blueprints, which can be helpful for players still leveling up their guns inWarzone. The biggest reason to loot Supply Crates, though, isthe plethora of Mutationsthat players can use to their advantage.
As expected, the Mutations in Purgatory are carried over from Mutation Resurgence, giving players various superpowers upon gaining access to them. Some of these include the ability to turn invisible, disguise as zombies, increase jump height, and more.Mutations can be acquired through Supply Crates, but can also befound in Scare Packages. Scare Packages offer tons of loot and occasionally let players soar straight to Torment Level 5, so ensure to grab them as they drop onto the map.
5Utilize Terriballs For Instant Kills
Terriballs Can Instantly Kill Operators & Are Necessary For Completing Event Challenges
While some of the best weapons inWarzoneoffer a fast TTK, there’s a unique item in Purgatory that provides an instant kill. Terriballs can be found scattered around the island or acquired through Scare Packages, identifiable by their red appearance. Though these items may seem harmless at first, players can use them to secure instant kills.A Terriball can be launched by either shooting it or running into it, and a launched Terriball will instantly eliminate a Mercenary or down any player it hits.
While Terriballs are tricky to use in combat and serve more as a fun Purgatory gimmick rather than a reliable weapon, they can be a fun way to take down the competition. There are two challenges tied to using the Terriball in the Purgatory Island Event. Players who kill 50 Mercenaries with a Terriball willunlock the Devil’s Favorite Calling Card. Additionally,getting three Operator kills or assists with the Terriballrewards theStill Beating Camo. Both challenges offer solid cosmetic rewards, making the use of Terriballs worth the effort.
6Chill In The Safe Zone
Safe Zones Offer Players Protection & The Ability To Earn XP
Purgatory is a two-hour-long game mode filled with nonstop action, but there is a way for players to take a break without leaving the match. Throughout the Hellspawn map, players canfind various Safe Zones, whichdisable the ability to harm otherswithin their vicinity. These zones put players into a third-person perspective and reset their Torment Level, but they serve as a great way to recoup after intense battles before jumping back into the fray. If players want to hold onto their Mutations and other acquired loot, or simply escape after a tough fight, the Safe Zone is a good place to head.
In addition to protecting players from harm, the Safe Zone also acts as a social hub in Purgatory, where they loot Supply Crates undisturbed andcommend other Operators. Though this feature might not seem significant, players earn a small XP reward for commending others. Doing so also allows players to unlock the Favored One Calling Card for the Purgatory Island Event, adding another cosmetic reward to their collection.
