Even thoughBlack Myth: Wukonghas always had a lot of publicity behind it, most people probably didn’t expect the game to be as successful as it was. ThisJourney to the West-inspiredaction RPG took the gaming world by storm when it was released on PC and PlayStation 5 earlier this year. Shortly after its June 27, 2025 launch,Black Myth: Wukongreached over 2.4 million concurrent players on Steam, making it far and away the most simultaneously-played singleplayer game ever on Valve’s PC storefront. In addition, it sold an eyewatering 10 million copies across all platforms in just 3 days, an incredible feat that very few games have been able to achieve.Black Myth: Wukongeventually went on to sell a total of 20 million units, as of October 1, and score an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
With how successful the title has been on PS5 and PC, it’s unfortunate that it isn’t available on Xbox, at least not at the moment.Black Myth: Wukongwas originally supposed to release for Xbox Series X/S alongside the PlayStation and PC versions of the game, but in June 2024,the Xbox port was abruptly delayedto an unspecified date. At the time,BM:Wdeveloper Game Science alleged that the launch of its hit action RPG on Microsoft’s consoles was postponed due to optimization issues, though it declined to elaborate on what said issues were. It’s still not clear what the exact cause of this delay is, but when the game is ready for release on Microsoft’s consoles, it would be great if Game Science replicates what Larian Studios did withBaldur’s Gate 3and its Xbox port.

The Xbox Version of Baldur’s Gate 3 Was Also Delayed Due to Technical Issues
LikeBlack Myth: Wukong, the Xbox version ofBaldur’s Gate 3also suffered an infamous delay. In early 2023,when Larian Studios announced thatBG3was coming to PlayStation 5, it didn’t confirm if the game would release on Xbox Series X/S. Because of this, many assumed that Sony had secured the acclaimedDungeons & DragonsRPG as a PS console exclusive, like it did with third-party titles such asFinal Fantasy 16andDeathloop. Larian quickly dispelled these assertions, however, as the company revealed that it did not sign any exclusivity contracts with PlayStation forBaldur’s Gate 3.
Shortly thereafter, Larian Studios confirmed that it was working on an Xbox port of the game, but it wasn’t able to release it alongside the PS5 version due to technical difficulties, specifically in regard to the Series S.Baldur’s Gate 3’s splitscreen co-op mode unfortunately couldn’t run well on Xbox’s lower-spec console and, due to a parity clause that Microsoft had in place,Larian was unable to release the game on the Series X or Swithout resolving this issue. Luckily, after the massive success thatBG3had on PS5 and PC, Microsoft stepped in to help the Belgian developer get the game on Xbox as soon as possible by letting it release on Series S without splitscreen support.Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox port was formally announced during The Game Awards 2023 and, in a surprise move, it was simultaneously released on that day.
Black Myth: Wukong’s Xbox Port Should Be Shadowdropped at The Game Awards, Just Like Baldur’s Gate 3
Game Science could benefit from doing something similar with the eventual Xbox port announcement forBlack Myth: Wukong.A recent ESRB ratingseems to suggest thatBM:Wmay come to Microsoft’s consoles as soon as this year, and if that does happen, shadowdropping the Series X/S version of the game at The Game Awards seems like a smart idea. Not only will the port receive significantly more media attention this way, it will also allow Xbox players to experience Game Science’s beloved action RPG on their preferred platform before 2024 comes to an end. Since this release strategy worked withBaldur’s Gate 3, it should also work withBlack Myth: Wukong.
