When It was first revealed that Bloober Team was the developer behind Konami’sSilent Hill 2Remakein 2022, the internet responded with mixed reactions. TheSilent Hillseries, which was initially created by a now-defunct Japanese studio called Team Silent, had been handed over to Western studios in the past, which didn’t exactly result in fruitful dividends for the franchise. The majority of the post-Team Silent games have been met with middling reception at best or scathingly negative reviews at worst. It didn’t help that Bloober Team’s track record had its ups and downs, either; while many of the Polish developer’s horror titles received decent reviews, they were a bit divisive. Because of this, some fans were concerned that Bloober Team wouldn’t be able to doSH2justice with theSilent Hill 2 Remake.
Luckily, Bloober Team was able to put fans' concerns to rest. In spite of the negative pre-release reception that it received,Silent Hill 2Remakeended up becoming a smash hit, both critically and commercially, when it released on PS5 and PC earlier this month.Silent Hill 2’s remake not only garnered glowing reviewson sites like OpenCritic and Steam, it also sold over 1 million copies in only three days, making it one of the fastest-selling entries in theSilent Hillfranchise. Given how successful the game has been, it seems likely that theSilent Hill 2 Remakewill be the beginning of a new era for theSHseries involving Bloober Team.
Bloober Team is Open to Making More Games in the Silent Hill Franchise
Following the recent reveal ofCronos: The New Dawn, a new, sci-fi horror IP from the studio, director Wojciech Piejko told IGN thatBloober Team was willing to work on moreSilent Hillprojects. According to Piejko, Bloober is “always open” to seizing new opportunities it likes, so if Konami does give the Polish developer the chance to continue working onSilent Hill, then there’s a good possibility that other installments in the legendary horror franchise will be remade in the future, just likeSH2.
Bloober Team Should Remake Silent Hill 1 and 3, If Given the Chance to Do So
There are a lot ofSilent Hillgames that Bloober Team could choose to remake, if given the opportunity. Perhaps the one that’s most in need of a modern touch-up, though, isthe originalSilent Hill. Released on the PS1 in 1999, the first entry in Konami’s long-running series was groundbreaking for its time. Unlike most horror games from its era,SIlent Hillwas thought-provoking and mature in terms of both plot and tone. However, despite the fact that the game’s narrative still holds up, its graphics and gameplay do not. As such, a modern remake of 1999’sSilent Hillwith completely overhauled combat and enhanced visuals seems like the next logical step for theSHfranchise afterSilent Hill 2Remake.
If Bloober Team does remake the firstSilent Hillinstallment, then it should alsoremake 2003’sSilent Hill 3at some point. Even though their names don’t indicate as such,SH3is actually a direct sequel toSH1, so players will need to play both games chronologically in order to properly experience their narratives. Therefore, it would be unfortunate if only one of the two titles got modernized and brought to current-gen platforms, but not the other.
Silent Hill 4: The Room Should Also Get the Silent Hill 2 Remake Treatment
In addition to these games, Bloober Team could also look into developing a remake ofSilent Hill 4: The Room, which came out in 2004. This is the finalSHtitle that was created by Team Silent before the studio was shuttered by Konami. Although it is somewhat more divisive compared to the company’s previous works, it still deserves to be remade for modern platforms. The same can’t necessarily be said for most of the later, Western-developed entries intheSilent Hillseries. UnlikeSilent Hill 2 Remake, they would probably have to be reimagined from scratch to warrant any remakes.
