Summary

The Far East Laboratory was first introduced inBlue Exorcist’sShimane Illuminati arc. Thisarc primarily focusedon Kamiki Izumo and her determination to save her younger sister from being experimented on by the Illuminati.

Through this arc, we learned more about the Illuminati’s goals and the human experiments conducted to accomplish them. These included the research done to create an immortality elixir that would stabilize the human vessel created for Satan. While the Far East Laboratory had many failures, its final product, Elixir 1117, was the ideal serum to create the completed elixir.

What is the Far East Laboratory?

Under the guise of Inari’s Bright Future Foundation, the facility attracted tourists whom they used in their experiments

The Far East Laboratory is an Illuminati Inari facility specializing in elixir research. Michael Gedoin, the facility’s head researcher, established it five years earlier. Dr. Gideon introduced himself to Kamiki Izumo alongside Yoshida Maria and directly referred to themselves as part of the Illuminati from the Advanced Research facility. Although they were part of the Illuminati, they worked under the guise of the Bright Future Foundation.

More information about the Illuminati was revealed during theShimane Illuminati arc. Initially, the researchers were interested in the Life-Taking Stone, which housed the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit. The spirit stone would kill any living thing that approached and could revive anything dead.

The Illuminati’s goalwas to create a human vessel for Satan and assist Lucifer, the King of Light, as his body continued to deteriorate. The Life-Taking Stone was essential for their research. However, the spirit stone was guarded by the Kamiki family, who established a lineage of female mediums that would quell the curse of the Nine-Tailed Fox. As a result, the researchers needed to establish an ideal relationship with the family to access the stone.

Although the Far East Laboratory was an Illuminati facility, it’s likely a minor facility, as the research did not produce conclusive results until Elixir 1117 was created. In Chapter 56, Dr. Gideon meets Lucifer for the first time during the five years the facility has been operational.

How did the Far East Laboratory gain control over Inari?

Although the researchers were interested in the spirit stone, they also intended to make Inari a tourist destination. They likely planned on gaining access to the spirit stone in this way. However, Izumo’s mother, Tamamo, became weak-hearted after her lover mentioned he no longer wanted to see her if she insisted he meet her two children.

The Nine-Tailed Foxsoon possessed Tamamo, and Izumo contacted Maria to help her mother. However, this allowed the facility to access a human possessed by a demon. Thus, they conducted multiple experiments on Tamamo in an attempt to complete the elixir research.

At this time, the facility was not yet known as the Far East Laboratory. After gaining access to Tamamo, who the Nine-Tailed Fox possessed, the facility quickly turned Inari into a tourist destination. To do this, the facility constructed Foxes Alley, one of the tourist destinations of the Far East Laboratory known for its delicious foods and restaurants.

The food eaten by the individuals visiting Foxes Alley is laced with an addictive. The tourist becomes addicted to the food and no longer experiences emotions of anger, sadness, fear, jealousy, or hate. However, those who become too addicted to the food will be invited to live in Inari Peace Town. Here, they will be experimented on by the Far East Laboratory for the Elixir research. However, many of the experiments have resulted in failure; thus, the test subjects have been turned into zombies.

The Far East Laboratory employed this method to gain steady access to humans to conduct experiments on. This was because the Elixir research resulted in failure most of the time, with subjects developing necrosis and a lack of intelligence, thus turning them into immortal zombies. However, Elixir 1117 was somewhat of a success. Although this elixir did not give the desired effect, the research obtained through it was used in the Final Elixir Experiment.

How did the Far East Laboratory conduct its experiments?

Tamamo was the primary source of the elixir; it was thus used on the unsuspecting tourists visiting Inari

Although countless tourists were used in the elixir experiments, the Far East Laboratories' primary research was done on Tamamo, which housed the Nine-Tailed Fox. After five years of extensive research, the facility found a way to force a demon into possession. With this forced possession, Tamamo was used in countless experiments in preparation for the elixir research.

However, after five years, Tamamo was a shell of herself, barely holding on as she was wheeled into meet Izumo for the first time in five years. The facility needed Izumo, the directdescendant of the Kamiki family, to carry out the experiments as she had a higher compatibility with the Nine-Tailed Fox the year prior. However, when the Illuminati kidnapped Izumo, it was found that she had a transfer compatibility of 0.08%, which would result in instant death.

While the Far East Laboratory produced less-than-favorable results, the research conducted within the facility had given the Illuminati the final breakthrough needed to create the complete Elixir. After tests on Tamamo, the facility likely used the elixir created on the human subjects they obtained through the Foxes Alley.

To create the completed Elixir, the Illuminati repeatedly used forced demon possession to upgrade the Chosen Ones. After the Chosen Ones were carbonized, they were doused with Elixir 1117, the product of the Far East Laboratory. With this, the Illuminati was able to create the completed Elixir, which wasused to revive Satan.
