The campaign mode used to be the focal point of earlyCall of Dutyentries. But with the introduction ofCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’s groundbreaking multiplayer mode, the series' focus began to shift, gradually overshadowing the campaign due to its immense popularity. Despite the amount of effort and time developers still put intoCall of Duty’s campaigns, most fall to the wayside after launch. That shouldn’t be the case forCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s campaign.

Unlike last year’s offering,Call of Duty: Black Ops 6delivers a very strong, full-length campaign. Though its story may start to fall apart under even light scrutiny, the intrigue found inBlack Ops 6’s campaign acts as a strong incentive for players to see it through to completion, and the game’s espionage backdrop still feels fresh after its introduction inBlack Ops Cold War. But by far the greatest strength ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s campaign is its variety, with each mission feeling refreshingly different from the last in terms of both visuals and gameplay.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Campaign Is Incredibly Varied

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Campaign Is a Globe-Trotting Adventure

Thebest campaigns inCall of Dutyhistoryhave been globe-trotting adventures that see players explore a brand-new part of the world with each mission. This structure has often allowed for a great deal of variation when it comes to environmental design and art direction, with each new location boasting a distinct set of architecture and scenery.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6follows this classicCall of Dutycampaign structure closely, taking players around the world during the course of its 11 missions. From anex-KGB safe house in Bulgaria, to an underground CIA research facility in Kentucky, to the snow-covered ruins of Vorkuta, to the deserts of Iraq,Call of Duty: Black Ops 6offers a different backdrop for every mission, and the visual differences in each gives them all a distinct sense of identity.

Even whenBlack Ops 6’s campaigndouble-dips with its settings, it uses environmental design to distinguish the tone and identity of each mission. For instance, ‘Hunting Season’ and ‘The Cradle’ are both set in Iraq, but both have very key differences in their visual designs that set them apart from one another, with ‘Hunting Season’ being set in the desert and ‘The Cradle’ being set in one of Saddam Hussein’s opulent palaces.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Campaign Is Always Switching Up Its Gameplay

A majorcriticism ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s campaignlast year – aside from its length – was its repetitive gameplay. Despite claiming the new Open Combat missions would shake up the usual run-and-gun formula, they instead felt like a step back for the franchise, offering little narrative content or the action set pieces that define the series' campaigns, and offering little variation in terms of gameplay.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s campaign avoids this criticism entirely, with each of its missions introducing some new mechanic or set piece that refreshes gameplay. Players will engage in classicCall of Dutyshootouts, high-octane vehicle chases, turret sequences, and stealth, with some missions even swapping between each gameplay style several times. There’s never a dull moment inBlack Ops 6’s campaign, and that’s something that couldn’t be said for last year’s entry.
