ThroughCall of Duty: Black Ops 6, players are once again diving deep into the world of espionage with some of their favorite characters. Picking up afterBlack Ops Cold War, this title sees them take on the mysterious Pantheon in hopes that they can stop them before it is too late. What ensues is a classicCall of Dutycampaign filled with shoot-outs, fun characters, dozens of memorable moments, and fast-paced action. But, while the coreCall of Duty: Black Ops 6campaign may be extremely familiar, the addition of the Rook sets it apart from the crowd.

Even though the concept of a safe house wasintroduced inCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the Rook is deeper than the campaign HUBs the franchise has offered before. Now, players are able to call some place home as they plan out their campaign, interact with a wide variety of characters, and gear themselves up for whatever the world wants to throw at them. Although limited, this feature adds to the story’s progression immensely. And if Treyarch and Raven want to make this mechanic a mainstay, then there are so many more routes they could take the Rook next.

Black Ops 6’s Rook is Brimming With Untapped Potential

Black Ops 6’s Rook is a Great Addition to the Campaign

Players are first introduced toBlack Ops 6’s Rooknear the start of the campaign, when their team needs a place to lie low and plan out their next moves. This building serves as the central hub for the entire campaign, with players spending time in between each mission within. It is here that they can interact with their allies, review past and future missions, and discover a few secrets strewn about. Although Treyarch could have just stopped there, it actually chose to make this space a core part of the game’s progression as well.

Throughout the campaign, players are able to find collectible bundles of cash hidden around each mission. This cash can then be used to purchase upgrades to the safe house, with three different stations able to be added. Once a station is built, players can then spend their cash on upgrades to their character or weaponry. These upgrades range from simple weapon buffs and inventory space to health buffs and damage nerfs. While none of it is super advanced, it really helps add an additional layer to thisalready-excitingCall of Dutyadventure.

The Rook Has So Many More Things it Could Offer if Given the Chance

It is nice to seeCall of Dutybe expanded with systems like this, and hopefully, these upgradable safe houses become core parts of the experience going forward. If they do, then the studio should not just leave them like this. There is actually so much more that could be done here if given the chance. More upgrades, more buffs, more characters, and even the ability to decorate the hub could take the Rook to new heights.

Right now, players have access to a Training Area, Gear Station, and Weapons Bench. In future titles, that could be expanded to other types of rooms like a Kitchen, Lounge, IT division, or even a Game Room. Each room could either offer special new upgrades, or they could simply serve as places to hang out with NPCs. As the campaign progresses, more NPCs could start calling the place home, and maybe players could even task them with doing certain things for special bonuses. It could give the game its own little management mechanic, which could be a lot of fun for many.

If anything, the nextCall of Dutyshould at least let players decorate this area a bit more, letting them discover various collectibles within the campaign that they can then deck the rooms out with. These could simply be things like bobbleheads based on campaign or Zombies characters, or they could be rewards like medals and trophies for feats of strength. Whatever form they come in, letting players customize this area could be the perfect piece of side content to take part in between all the high-stakes battles.
