There is now less than a month to wait for the launch ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6, with a lot of anticipation starting to build around the title. Treyarch has been actively developing the upcoming game for four years at this point, with high expectations existing around its campaign, Zombies, and multiplayer experiences. It has been frequently mentioned that the project is aiming to go back to the traditions and basics of the widerBlack Opsfranchise, with a variety of past modes and mechanics making a welcome return.
One confirmed returning multiplayer game mode inCall of Duty: Black Ops 6is Gunfight, and while this is a rather new addition toCall of Dutyas a whole, it is already one that has a history withinBlack Ops. Gunfight has grown to become one of the most competitive and enjoyable modes in modernCall of Duty, and 2020’sBlack Ops Cold Wardid a lot to make the mode feel even more rewarding.Cold Warwas one of the few games to feature Gunfight tournaments, for example, andBlack Ops 6is in a prime position to carry this tradition forward.
Gunfight Tournaments Could Make a Bigger and Better Return in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Gunfight was introduced toCoDwith 2019’sModern Warfare, which itself marked a big shift in the movement and pacing of the franchise’s popular multiplayer modes. Away from the break-neck chaos of standard 6v6 gameplay, Gunfight sees two teams of two players face off against each other in a series of perma-death rounds. With no health regeneration and with each team receiving the same alternating loadouts of weapons and equipment, Gunfight necessitates a level of strategy and teamwork that cannot be found in many otherCall of Dutymodes.
TheCall of Dutycommunity took very well to this initial portrayal ofGunfight inModern Warfare, with the mode having since gone on to appear inCold War,Call of Duty Mobile,Modern Warfare 2,Modern Warfare 3, and the upcomingBlack Ops 6. Many different variants of the standard Gunfight formula have been implemented across these games to shake things up, such as 3v3 matches, but oneCold Warvariant stands out among the rest.
Black Ops Cold Waroffered periodic Gunfight tournamentsalongside the classic version of the mode, taking place at specific times and usually seeing sixteen teams of two compete in total. While Gunfight tournaments were first introduced in 2019’sModern Warfare,Cold Waris the only other title to feature them, setting a standard for the sub-franchise thatBlack Ops 6needs to continue. Winning players would progress through a total of four games throughout a given tournament, with different placements offering a variety of rewards such as calling cards, emblems, and even weapon blueprints.
Gunfight’s Early Presence in Black Ops 6 Will Be Perfect For Tournaments
It has been confirmed thatGunfight will return inBlack Ops 6, and the focus on tradition for the upcoming game should extend toBlack Ops' recent history with Gunfight tournaments. Treyarch could easily expand on the opportunities that these tournaments provide, increasing the frequency of when tournaments happen and offering more attractive first-place rewards like unique operator skins or in-game currency.
It is true thatGunfight has been added quite later on into the life cycles of recentCoDtitles, but thankfully, this is set to change withBlack Ops 6. It has been confirmed that Gunfight will be present from day one with the launch ofBlack Ops 6, meaning tournaments could easily play a larger role than ever, and Treyarch should not let such a fan-favorite aspect of the game mode go to waste.
