Summary
Deadpool & Wolverineis breaking records left, right and center, and it has just broken yet another impressive record. The R-rated movie in which the Merc with a Mouth teams up with the guy with sharp claws and adamantium bones is fast becoming one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) most impressive movies ever.
Deadpool & Wolverinewas released in cinemas earlier this year, and some have called the movie (and Deadpool himself) “Marvel Jesus”, and it honestly looks like that might be the case. The movie has gone on to make over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, making it thehighest-grossing R-rated film of all time. It also showed Marvel Studios that they could make R-rated movies and they wouldn’t bomb at the box office.Deadpool & Wolverineis the seventh highest-grossing movie ever, overtakingIron Man 3in the process.
It’s now been revealed viaDeadlinethat Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s MCU picture has just had the highest-selling first week ever for an R-rated film on digital platforms in the United States, which is very impressive indeed. The previous record-holder wasKeanu Reeves’John Wick: Chapter 4.Deadpool & Wolverine, which was directed by Shawn Levy, was made available to rent or buy on digital platforms on October 1, and since then, it’s proven to be a very popular purchase online.
When the movie was released in cinemas on July 25 earlier this year, it was the comic book movie that fans had been waiting for for what seemed like an eternity. The film was the very first R-rated movie in the MCU, and it also brought Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool into the MCU, and he dragged Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine into it as well (not quite kicking and screaming). This was huge for Marvel movie fans all over the world, not only because it meant they got to seeHugh Jackman return to play Loganone last time (or until he’s 90), but it also opened up the floodgates as far as R-rated Marvel movies are concerned.
There are now reports that Marvel Studios is working on multiple R-rated projects afterDeadpool & Wolverine’sincredible success, both at the box office and with fans. There have been reports that Marvel has given the green light to aMidnight Sonsproject that will be R-rated. TheDaredevil: Born Againseries, which will be much more violent than the previous MCU shows, was also put into motion after it was announced that Kevin Feige had given Reynolds and co. the green light to makethe thirdDeadpoolmovie R-rated.
Then there’s the Blade project, which has been in a state of limbo for quite some time now. However, reports suggest that Marvel is very much open to the idea of making the movie R-rated, which would make perfect sense as far as the iconic comic book character’s concerned. Mahershala Ali is still attached to the project. However, fans seem to be rather keen on the idea ofbringing Wesley Snipes backto play the role. Those calls have only become louder since he returned to cameo as his version of Blade inDeadpool & Wolverine, which was a moment to behold for all comic book movie fans worldwide.
Deadpool & Wolverinewill be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 22.
