In Bungie’s latest developer livestream, the team teased thatthe Apollo expansion forDestiny 2will include a “Metroidvania-inspired destination.” The expansion will take a non-linear approach, with players being able to explore multiple destinations from the start. Progressing the story and finding a specific item will open up new areas for exploration, as Bungie’s goal for the expansion involves keeping players invested in the world. New concept artwork for this destination was shown, confirming that players will meet a new group of people, uncover untold secrets, gain new powerful abilities, and make important choices along the way. Bungie also teases that 25 to 30 “different threads” of stories may be experienced as players complete different activities.

Destiny 2 Codename: Apollo Will Be a Metroidvania-Style Expansion

Bungie did not share any specific details about the people and locations shown in the concept artwork. However, the developers note that the Apollo expansion was inspired by 1960s progressive rock and animated series like Netflix’sScavengers Reign. These inspirations gave Bungie ideas for crafting a new “exotic world” that emphasizes “the joy of discovery” in Apollo whenDestiny 2Codename: Frontiersbegins next year.

Along with the Apollo expansion,Destiny 2players can expect an armor overhaul in Codename: Frontiers. The overhaul is meant to further incentivize buildcrafting and make stats easier to understand for all players. There will also be set bonuses, and stats will be more impactful with additional effects for players to consider.
