As it happens, the Final Shape is not so final, as theDestiny: Risingmobile game sees the world ofDestinycontinued and considerably re-imagined for mobile devices. With the recent release of the second act ofThe Final ShapeDLC freshly enthralling fans of the sci-fi shooter in the harrowingly illustrious three-act tale, the next step for the franchise appears to be branching into entirely new territory before the coming of the third and final act. The announcement ofDestiny: Risingprecedes the expectation of more lore, new areas to explore, classes and abilities, gear and weapons, and possibly more yet revealed.

With the closed alpha coming as soon as November 1,Destiny: Risingseems to be aiming for a sweet spot in the lull betweenacts ofThe Final Shape, yet the question remains of what differentiates the title from the mainline series aside from its newfound capacity to be played on smartphones and otherwise compatible mobile devices. For starters, though the intellectual property associated with theDestinygame world is owned by Bungie,Destiny: Risingis being developed and published by NetEase Games. The story to be told and the explosive action yet to unfold will be the work of a separate developer working to craft an alternate timeline, independent of the events ofDestinyandDestiny 2.

Faster Gunplay, New Abilities, and New and Returning Characters in Destiny: Rising

Perhaps the biggest and most notabledifference betweenDestiny 2andDestiny: Risingis the pacing of the gameplay. Being thatDestiny: Risingis a mobile game, it must contend with the appeal and drawbacks of operating on mobile devices, or – more accurately and most predictably – people’s smartphones. Though all games are expected to hook their audience and hold their interest through presentation,Destiny: Rising’s condition of being a mobile game means that its content must anticipate the kind of time and attention span mobile players are predicted to have and accommodate it while still being an experience worthy of theDestinybranding.

Ultimately, and arguably to the benefit of interested gamers, this means that the content ofDestiny: Risingshould steer more towardsDestiny’s greatest strength of its extraordinary sci-fi action combatagainst hordes of enemies rather than break up that action with longer drawn-out sequences, game menus, etc. that are not unpleasant but pad time that mobile players likely won’t have. The heightened pacing of the gameplay loop can be seen in the very trailers that the developers released alongsideDestiny: Rising’s announcement. HowDestiny: Risingplans to balance a bombastic gameplay loop while telling a unique, compelling narrative remains to be seen, but the title has plenty of inspiration to light the way.

Destiny: Rising Important Narrative and Gameplay Highlights

The quickened gameplay pacing is not the only noteworthy alteration between the titles, however, as players will forgo the iconicthree-class system of Warlock, Titan, and Hunterin favor of playing a roster of iconic, legacyDestinycharacters, including Ikora Rey and Iron Lord Jolder, as well as the customizable player character known as “Wolf.” This change from the traditional class system (and, by extension, subclasses) sets the stage for the possibility of new, exciting ways to navigate combat and crowd control with new and special abilities varying between characters, which could also explain, to some extent, the aggressive change in pacing overall.

NetEase’sDestiny: Risingis arriving to expandthe world ofDestinyinto a new, mobile space, and from what has been revealed this far, its delivery appears promising. It is distinctive enough fromDestiny 2to scratch the itch for more and newDestinycontent while taking the opportunity to create an easy point-of-entry for new fans interested in the series and lore. Now, for the first time ever, when fans aren’t home to continueDestiny 2’sThe Final Shape,Destiny: Risingmay provide just the boost they need.
