This guide will initially focus on the length of the Vessel of Hatred campaign, though it will ultimately explore the expansion’s optional content. Indeed, while not every player will be interested in engaging with optional content, there are definitely opportunities to continue playing Vessel of Hatred after finishing its main quest.
Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred Length
Players who focus exclusively on working through Vessel of Hatred’s main quest should expect to reach the end of the campaign in around12 hours. For those fans who are curious, the average completion time ofDiablo 4’s main storyis around 25 hours, which means that the DLC’s campaign is approximately half the length of the base game’s campaign.
That said, this estimated length is only applicable if the player does not undertake any of Vessel of Hatred’s side quests, of which there are 35, or complete any of its dungeons, of which there are 20. It also does not factor in the time that it takes to find the 30 Tenets of Akarat, which are scattered across Nahantu and function very much like baseDiablo 4’s Altars of Lilith. This optional content can serve to add several hours to a playthrough, and it is not even the full extent of what is available in Vessel of Hatred.
Indeed, the expansion also adds repeatable content in the form of the Undercity, which becomes available near the Vessel of Hatred campaign’s midpoint. For the uninitiated, the Undercity is a timed dungeon that allows players to target rewards that are of interest, and fans can spend many hours clearing it as they prepare for the endgame.
With respect to that endgame, Vessel of Hatred adds a new activity called the Dark Citadel. This co-op dungeon requires a minimum of two players, though four are recommended, and fans who want to maximize the rewards that they earn fromDiablo 4’s Dark Citadelmust clear it every week. Once again, this activity provides an opportunity to put many additional hours into the expansion after completing its main story quests.
Players must complete a post-campaign questline before they can enter the Dark Citadel. This questline requires fans to recruit all theMercenaries in Vessel of Hatred, visit Helltides, and more, and it may take players several hours to finish it.
