It seems rather unlikely that aJoker 3could happen, considering Todd Phillips’ own comments on the project. However, when it comes to Hollywood and comic book movies, it’s hard to never-say-never, and there are some factors to take into account when it comes toJoker: Folie à Deuxthat may pave the way for aJoker 3, albeit a different one.
Those who have seen the movie already, might be well aware of why it might be a tough subject to pull off a trilogy, yet there are some roads teased yet unexplored in Joker: Folie à Deuxthat could push forward for another feature movie, whether that’sin Arthur Fleck’s shoesor those who have walked in his path.
Heavy spoilers ahead for Joker: Folie à Deux
6Say Hello to Harvey Dent
The Origins of Two-Face Could Make For An Interesting Movie
DC Black Label Elseworlds storieslikeJoker(2019) shouldn’t be dead in the water afterJoker: Folie à Deux. There’s still a lot of potential for Elseworld tales in the DC Studios market, and what better way to start than with the story of an up-and-coming lawyer who has his life forever changed in a courtroom battle?
Harvey Dent’s left side of his face becomes disfigured and bloodied inJoker: Folie à Deux, teasing the fate that awaits him as Two-Face. Harvey’s story could be told as a modern tragedy as a split personality consumes him, and audiences learn of his rise and his fall as a D.A. and criminal.
5Room for a Harley Quinn Spin-Off
Lee’s Journey After Arthur’s Death and With Her Pregnancy Could Make For A Curious Tale
Lady Gaga captivates as Lee inJoker: Folie à Deux, and her take on the iconic Harley Quinn is far different from what fans might expect, but equally as memorable. Her striking and manipulative personality proves her potential for a post-Jokermovie andan R-rated character studythat could go as deep asJoker(2019) did with Arthur Fleck.
Lee has a great backstory worth uncovering, and if she’s telling the truth about her pregnancy, the way she deals with that could make for an interesting story. This wouldn’t even be the first time Harley Quinn has led her own solo movie, as Margot Robbie led the Joker’s ex in 2020’sBirds of Prey.
4Lee is Pregnant With Arthur’s Child
Arthur’s Legacy May Live On Through Lee’s Pregnancy
One of Lee’s gripping vices for keeping Arthur manipulated into being her Joker comes from when she tells him that she is pregnant. Whether it’s a ruse or not, it leaves an interesting potential for future stories. What would Lee do with the son of Joker? Arthur dies thinking he’s going to have a son, and his last song is dedicated to that fact before he bleeds out.
Would Lee keep Arthur’s child, and attempt to raise him? Or would she abandon him out of her hatred for Arthur Fleck, thus creating a cycle of parents abandoning children, much like how Arthur Fleck doesn’t know his true parents or his real name?
3A New Joker
A New Smile Takes The Joker Moniker
With Arthur Fleck back in Arkham at the end ofJoker: Folie à Deux, it seems that a corrupt system has beaten him down into submission. As Arthur continues through his mundane life, an unnamed Arkham inmate tells him a joke. The joke ends the same way it does for Murray Franklin, with the punchline being “you get what you ####### deserve.”
The inmate shivs Arthur to death and sits down cackling to himself as he carves a smile into his face with the same weapon that murders Arthur. There’s potential here for a new story, because this couldbe the real Joker, or is it yet another false imitator who will share the same ate as Arthur down the line?
2The Aftermath of Arthur Fleck’s Death
Loyal Followers of Arthur Fleck May Riot in the Wake of His Death
Joker: Folie à Deuxdoes a great job at showing how loyalist followers can become a dangerous cult, and truly warp the intended words and message of their supposed messiah. Even whenArthur claims he is not Jokerin the courtroom, it doesn’t stop some fans from blowing it up while attempting to help him flee the scene.
In the wake of Arthur’s death, conspiracy is bound to whirlwind through Gotham City on who killed him. Was it the inmate audiences saw, or will his followers believe it to be a corrupt system assassinating him? It could be an interesting concept tosee Gotham tear itself apartin the wake of Arthur’s death, but do the citizens truly care enough?
1Keeping Up with the Waynes
Bruce Wayne’s Journey as Gotham’s Dark Knight Begins
A rather absent part ofJoker: Folie à Deuxwas the Wayne family.Joker(2019) actually held them in high regard, with Arthur’s belief that he was Thomas Wayne’s son, and the meeting with Bruce and Alfred Pennyworth. However, the Waynes aren’t mentioned all that much after their death in the Joker riots, and since it has been 2 years, one can only assume what Bruce Wayne is doing.
The importance of Bruce Wayne inJoker(2019) proves to audiences that this is still Gotham City, and this is still an Elseworld whereBruce becomes Batman. Yet, with Bruce still young and no Batman in sight, perhaps a sequel can showcase how justice and order were maintained after the demise of Arthur Fleck.
