Summary
Veteran fans have pointed out a “missed opportunity” to pay tribute to one of Vegeta’s most obscure looks inDragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Released as a follow-up to the belovedDragon Ball Z Tenkaichiseries,Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zerobrings the series' familiar gameplay to current platforms.
Just days after its release,Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zerohas achieved massive sales milestonesand energized one of the largest and most durable fanbases around. Millions of players are trying the game and experiencing its frantic 3D combat and a huge character roster drawing from the deep well ofDragon Ballhistory. Many playable characters and cosmetic updates also include nods to “What if” scenarios and reference obscure corners of the franchise’s lore.
But the sheer scale ofDragon Ball’s history made it inevitable that at least some fans might be unable to find a personal favorite in the roster. One such fan, Reddit user Shelusval1, came away “a little disappointed” at the game’s not having an obscure “Red Vegeta” available as an optional skin forone of the most influentialDragon Ballantiheroes ever.
Fans Discuss Adding Red Vegeta to Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
In their post, Shelusval1 highlighted a version of Vegeta with bright red-orange hair and orange battle armor. However, this “red Vegeta” is not related to the redheadedSuper Saiyan God transformationor any other canonical version of Vegeta. Instead, the skin would be a reference to a coloring error made in the original 1989 broadcast of theDragon Ball Zanime. A miscommunication betweenDragon Ball Zmanga creator Akira Toriyama and animation studio Toei Animation had led the animators to use the wrong color scheme for Vegeta’s hair and clothing during his earliest color appearance. Later episodes and the remasteredDragon Ball ZKaiseries corrected the oversight, using black for Vegeta’s hair and white and gold for his armor.
Some fellow players were amused that one might want such an obscure reference to an animation error represented. Others did agree with the sentiment that greater customization is needed inDragon Ball: Sparking! Zeroand hoped that future patches and DLC additions might make up for a perceived shortfall in the amount of alternate skins and colors available for the playable characters.
The rare “red Vegeta” isn’t the only example of an interesting coloration error in a famous anime. In the first broadcast ofNaruto Shippuden, theRinnegan of Painwere depicted as multicolored, almost rainbow-like eyes, when the actual color was supposed to be a uniform shade of purple. Perhaps Bandai Namco will see fit to pay homage to this funny, if inconsequential, version of Vegeta in future updates toDragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
