The originalThe Running Manwas released in 1987and adapted from King’s 1982 novel (published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman). The movie stars as Captain Benjamin Stuart “Ben” Richards, a man living in 2017 in a totalitarian police state. The title of the story comes from a TV show calledThe Running Manwhere criminals try to win a trip and freedom from the government. Since killers run after the criminals, it’s a dark and violent show. This plot addresses themes similar toThe Hunger Games. WhileThe Running Manisn’t a young adult story, it also looks at the connection between violence and entertainment.

In an interview withUSA Today, Powell talked about his excitement about starring in the film directed by Wright, whose work he enjoys. Powell said:

“I’ve been an Edgar Wright fan my whole life. And talking to him about ‘Running Man,’ what’s been really incredible is his take on it. It’s very much not the original Schwarzenegger flick, it’s much more grounded in the Stephen King (novella) version.”

According toBox Office Mojo, the originalThe Running Manmovie grossed $38,122,105 worldwide. The film also has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While fans are of course familiar with King’s horror stories, fromthe prequelPet Sematary: Bloodlinestothe remake of the vampire taleSalem’s Lot, King has also written a lot of action-packed and sci-fi stories. The Running Manremake is intriguing since it’s about a dystopia, and the original has many smart themes that are still relevant today, from a commentary on government structures to how criminals are treated.
