Summary

Electronic Gaming Monthly has opened a Kickstarter and it’s already destroyed its original goal after being online for just a day. The Kickstarter campaign is running to fund an EGM Compendium that will celebrate the magazine and the games that it wrote about across the years.

Printed gaming magazines are becoming rarer all the time.Game Informer was shut downby its parent company GameStop not too long ago, and Play Magazine shut down after almost 30 years of publication earlier in October. With the prevalence of online media, videos on demand, and live streaming, many gaming publications have either shut their doors or been forced to close by parent companies. However, it’s clear that these classics still have a ton of fans.

Electronic Gaming Monthly is running aKickstarterto fund the EGM Compendium and cleared its original goal within 2 1/2 hours of the campaign opening. The book is described as a “definitivehistory of video games” as seen through the pages of the magazine. The 320 page book will feature excerpts from the magazine, commentary from the editors, with coverage of both well-known, loved games and the lesser-known or even canceled projects included. It will also feature contributions from game developers and gaming influencers and will be published in a 9”x12” hardcover book.

Where the EGM Kickstarter Has Gone Since

At the time of writing, Kickstarter had $176,000 pledged, dramatically passing the original $35,000 goal. This has allowed the campaign to secure almost all of its stretch goals, resulting in a bigger book, more pages, and bookmarks. Perhaps the most exciting stretch goal completed, though, is that the entirety of theEGM publicationhistory will be uploaded online as a digital archive. Lastly, the final $250,000 stretch goal hasn’t been achieved yet, but if it is, a “supergroup” of EGM editors and writers will actually write and publish an all-new print issue of the magazine.

With nearly a month to go until the Kickstarter is completed, there’s a good chance that even more stretch goals will be introduced. While some of the reward tiers are beginning to sell out, fans ofclassic gaming magazinesand game history in general should strongly consider checking out the campaign. In any case, though, it’s good to know that all of the history covered in EGM over the decades will be preserved online. Even those who weren’t around to read the issues as they released will be able to look back and see what gaming history was like as it transpired.
