Summary
Mario and Luigi: Brothershipis the next game in theMario and Luigirole-playing series, which includes the likes ofMario and Luigi: Dream TeamandMario and Luigi: Paper Jam. InMario and Luigi: Brothership, the Mario brothers are tasked with reconnecting the broken continent of Concordia by bringing each of its islands back together.
For the most part,Mario and Luigi: Brothershipadopts the gameplaystyle of its predecessors by allowing players to combine the skills of both Mario and Luigi in combat and exploration. However,Mario and Luigi: Brothership’s premise is its most defining characteristic in the series, which sees the Mario brothers setting sail on their ship to discover new islands and make Concordia whole again.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership Is Full of Unique Features
Players Will Sail the High Seas to Discover and Reconnect Concordia’s Drifting Islands
Mario and Luigi: Brothership’s core gameplay loop sees players frequently sailing the high seas aboard Shipshape Island, which, as its name suggests, is an island that is shaped like a ship. As they explore the vast ocean, they’ll discover drifting islands that were once a part of the larger Concordia. Upon discovering these islands, players can launch Mario and Luigi out of Shipshape’s canon and onto the newly discovered island in a comedic sequence that appears strikingly similar toLink’s canonlaunch inZelda: The Wind Waker.
Once they land on an island, players are tasked with overcoming a series of challenges that are unique to that island, after which they can form an “island link” with Shipshape Island. As more islands are reconnected to Concordia, players will then gain access to new side quests, new areas, and more. It seems as though players will be able to use varying approaches to complete some of these objectives as well, possibly mirroringimprovisational gameplay akin toZelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
It should also be noted thatMario and Luigi: Brothershipfeatures open-ended exploration, meaning players can tackle each island in whichever order they choose.
Players Can Control Mario and Luigi Simultaneously and Perform ‘Bros. Moves’ to Overcome Obstacles
As they have been able to in previousMario and Luigititles, players will be able to control Mario and Luigi simultaneously inMario and Luigi: Brothershipto overcome obstacles. One of the unique methods the game provides players for doing so is its “Bros. Moves,” abilities that see Mario and Luigi combining their powers to perform incredible feats of traversal. For example, Mario and Luigi can transform into a UFO to fly across gaps, roll into a ball to enter pipes, or throw fireballs and snowballs to melt or freeze anything in their path.
Luigi also has the ability to use “logic” to create unique solutions to problems, like hiding in a barrel to avoid detection.
Mario and Luigi: Brothership Features Turn-Based Combat Where Timing Is Everything
Just as theMario and Luigiseries has in the past,Mario and Luigi: Brothershipfeatures turn-based combat where timing is everything — which is also similar toSuper Mario RPG’s combat. While players can then select a skill they would like Mario and Luigi to perform in battle, those skills are executed by pressing the button indicated on the screen in time with each character’s actions. Successfully doing so deals damage to enemies, but failing negatively affects Mario and Luigi.
Enemy attacks can be dodged and countered inMario and Luigi: Brothership, but timing matters here as well. Players can also use special items called “Battle Plugs” that can deal damage and cause a variety of effects, even healing Mario and Luigi automatically. Multiple Battle Plugs can also be set to create unique combinations in battle. Finally, Mario and Luigi have special ultimate skills called “Bros. Attacks” that see them combining forces to deal tremendous amounts of damage following a brief cinematic, similar toFinal Fantasy 7’s Limit Breaks.
