Summary

Obi-Wan Kenobihas been on hiatus with no sign of returning since its release as a limited series in 2022, despite many fans and the show’s lead being outspoken about wanting more of the same. A recent statement from the titular star seems to suggest that the effort wasn’t wasted.

WhileStar Warsmade its name on the big screen with the original and sequel trilogies, the franchise’s acquisition by Disney would bring with it a new focus on TV and streaming content that simply did not exist before. One such new project in this vein was theObi-Wan Kenobiminiseries, which saw the return of Ewan McGregor’s iconic character from the prequels. While the show had its detractors, it was one of the stronger offerings from Disney’sStar Wars, and certain segments of the fanbase were eager for a second season, including McGregor himself. However, there would only benegative updates concerning the chance for a new seasonfor the longest time.

Despite the lack of positive signs from the franchise prior to this point, it seems thatMcGregor might have had a point about getting more stories withObi-Wan Kenobi, as the star recently revealed that there’s been some progress made. Speaking at aComicConStar Warspanel, the fan-favorite Jedi Master revealed that there was now an actual movement behind the scenes towards making a new season of the show and thrilling fans with some of the things he’d like to do with a second season if given the chance. “…Obviously, between the end of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and [later] when Alec Guinness is Obi-Wan Kenobi,” McGregor explained. “There’s gotta be another few stories in there and we’re definitely hoping…well, ‘exploring’ that, I think, would be the word to say,”

Star Wars isn’t done with Kenobi, as the franchise recentlysurprised fans with a prequel-era story heavily involving the character, and there’s sure to be more like that for a new season to explore. McGregor would give a response that netted thunderous support from fans when asked about what he’d like to do going forward with the character. “There’s a couple of things. I’d quite like to wear that armor, I was speaking to someone earlier, from the Clone Wars. I think that’s something I would enjoy.” On the subject of having to submit to some degree of digital de-aging to portray a Clone Wars-era Obi-Wan, McGregor agreed and gave another important reason why he’d be up for it. “I don’t care, I’ll do it,” he said. “And that way, Hayden and I can really get back together again.”

This is a significant step forward from previous reports about backstage interest in more of the show, even from McGrego’s optimistic self. This is good news for fans that want more Kenobi, but the idea that this exploration is going on might imply that there’s more than a new season on the table. In a similar fashion toThe Mandalorian’sbittersweet upcoming film conclusion,Obi-Wan Kenobimight end up forgoing another season to instead be made into a blowout film project that will make full use of the massive star power and fan adoration that McGregor brings to the franchise. Another possibility, especially in light of the comments about the Clone Wars, would be McGregor and Christensen playing a major role in a futureAhsokaproject. Going off of the flashbacks in season one of theAhsokashow on Disney+, any look back at the Clone Wars in live action would be an amazing get for fans of the franchise.

All things considered, the timing of this news might not be a coincidence. With plans forDaisy Ridley’s newStar Warsproject rumored to be on ice, it’s anyone’s guess what direction the franchise might choose to take moving forward. For now, viewers can only wait to see if McGregor will get his wish and return as part of the effort to move the franchise pastThe Acolyteand onto less controversial things. If it does turn into a full-on movie, fans can at least look forward to some big-budget action from one of the franchise’s most powerful characters.
