Falloutadapts Bethesda’s long-running and popular role-playing video game series of the same name. Rather than adapt any one game specifically, theFalloutTV series is a brand-new chapter set within the world of the games. It stars Ella Purnell as Lucy, a vault-dweller who leaves the confines of Vault 33 to seek out her kidnapped father, Hank (Kyle MacLachlan). In the dystopian wasteland, viewers are also introduced tonew characters like Walton Goggins' Ghouland Aaron Moten’s Brotherhood of Steel squire, Maximus. Throughout the episodes, different factions fromFalloutlore form part of the story, such as the Enclave, the New California Republic, and Vault-Tec.
On October 2, barely six months after its debut,Prime Video announced in a TweetthatFalloutSeason 1 had reached 100 million viewers worldwide. This comes afterFalloutwas reported to have hit 65 million viewers in its first 16 days of availability, making it the second most-watched show on Prime Video, behindThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The viewership numbers have slowed since the hype for the series died down, but the factFallouthas managed to entice 35 million more viewers over the past six months is still a notable achievement.
The success of Prime Video’sFalloutseries was undeniable, with the series not only scoring high viewership numbers but also earning 16 Emmy Award nominations andboosting sales and interest in Bethesda’s video game franchise. Positive reviews from both fans and critics alike also cemented it firmly as one of the best video game adaptations in recent years.
Given all that, it didn’t take long for Prime Video tocommission a second season ofFallout, with writing underway on the new season as of August 2024. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment of the Prime Video series after the finale ofFallout’sfirst season set up the action to take place in the iconicvideo game location of New Vegas in season 2.
Fallout’ssuccess has seemingly also encouraged more video game adaptations from Prime Video. The streamer will soon release theanimated anthology seriesSecret Level,which includes 15 stories set within the worlds of different video games includingSifu, The Outer Worlds, andUnreal Tournament. Prime Video has also ordered a live-action TV series adaptation of Sony’s popularGod of Warfranchise, withWheel of Timeproducer Rafe Judkins on board as the showrunner which will seemingly adapt the 2018 installment in the video game series for screen.
