A group ofMetroidfans have shared the concept of a game on the Nintendo 64, highlighting the series' potential on the 64-bit console.Metroidgames have been prominently featured on most Nintendo consoles, but the N64 notably neglected the franchise.

When the N64 was released, it was the first major 3D graphics console from Nintendo, opening the door to a new generation of games. The N64 remains a highly regarded retro console, given its success in translating many popular Nintendo IPs into 3D experiences. While the console sold well during its generation, someiconic franchises likeMetroidandFire Emblemwere ignored throughout its life cycle. Similar to Captain Falcon, many N64 players' first experience withMetroidwas by playing Samus in the firstSuper Smash Bros. A small group of enthusiasts decided to rectify this situation by making their ownMetroidN64 game.

YouTuber InDenial Game Studio recently shared a gameplay trailer for theirMetroidN64concept, Another Metroid 64. The clip begins with a familiarMetroidsight, red lights flashing accompanied by a foreboding alarm and alien symbols. Samus then appears from within a ball of light, showing a more polygonal frame than her appearance inSuper Smash Bros. The scene then cuts to a Metroid contained in a laboratory tube before showing Samus spinning into Morph Ball form in the hands of a Chozo statue. The game also seems to include some platforming sections which are shown off with two landscape shots. The video then concludes by showing a sphere of 2D art that may indicate the story behind why Samus is on this planet.

This Is What Metroid 64 Could’ve Looked Like

Another Metroid 64’s gameplay trailer focuses on some of Samus' abilities, including the Charge Beam, Bombs, and a companion Metroid. These are seemingly chosen by pressing one of three C-button options, with the Metroid being mapped to the down button. The footage also features a first-person perspective mode that allows Samus to use precise aim to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. This game is still in production, meaning some things highlighted in the trailer may be changed before it’s finished. As it’s a 3D title, thisMetroidgame would likely fit in theMetroid Primeseries, which wasrejuvenated on the Nintendo Switchwith a remaster of the first title. This trailer may give fans an idea of what aMetroid64 game could have looked like if Nintendo produced one.

WhileMetroidmissed the N64 market,Super Metroidhas become such a cult classic that itsparked a subgenre withCastelvania; Metroidvania. As Nintendo is known for sending cease and desist letters to fan projects, InDenial Game Studio may not be able to finish their project.
