Nobuo Uematsu has confirmed thatFantasian: Neo Dimensionwill be his final major project as a video game composer. Responsible for creating some of thebestFinal Fantasysoundtracks, the composer has also worked on many other well-known titles, includingChrono TriggerandRomancing SaGa.More recently, he returned forFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeandFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, writing the main themes for both. After leaving a permanent mark on the industry that will never fade, the musician has now confirmed his final project in the world of video games.

In a new Twitter post, Uematsu says that the soundtrack forFantasian: Neo Dimensionwill be his final full work as a video game composer. While the news will be troubling for long-time fans of the musician’s work, in 2021, Sakaguchi made a similar claim, stating in an interview thatFantasianwould likely be the last game Uematsu composedfrom beginning to end. At the time, theFinal FantasyandFantasiancreator pointed out that the pair’s collaboration was particularly important due to this fact, as they had worked together for 35 years and wanted to end on a high note together. The composer will continue to work as a freelancer on game projects, but explains that he wants more time to make the music he wants to make. It’s likely that Uematsu will return to pen the theme song for the final entry in theFinal Fantasy 7 Remaketrilogy.

Fantasianwas originally released in 2021 exclusively for Apple Arcade. Developed and published by Sakaguchi’s studio, Mistwalker, theunique turn-based gameincluded a 60-piece soundtrack entirely composed by Uematsu, despite concerns regarding the musician’s health. Choosing not to stick to one specific genre, Uematsu composed most of the score for a synthesizer, and also experimented with an improvised jazz track for the first time in his career. ​​​​​​​

Scheduled to be released on December 5 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S,Fantasian: Neo Dimensionis a high-definition port of the original mobile title. The game follows Leo, a boy who awakens after a strange explosion in a strange land with no memory of how he arrived there.Fantasian: Neo Dimensionwill include enhanced graphics, an easier difficulty setting, and full voice acting in English and Japanese. In honor of the game’s dream team of Uematsu and Sakaguchi, players will also be able to change the battle music, choosing from a selection ofthe bestFinal Fantasybattle themes.
