Summary
NewGreen Lanternactor Aaron Pierre was only recently cast as John Stewart for the DCU’sLanternsseries, but artwork by a fan-favorite digital artist gives fans an idea of what the young star may look like in the character’s iconic costume.
Last week, Warner Bros. announced Pierre has been cast as John Stewart in the DCU’sGreen Lanternseries. Shortly after, the company announcedKyle Chandler will play Hal Jordan inLanterns, confirming earlier reports that he was in negotiations. Of course, because production onLanternsdoesn’t start until early next year, Warner Bros. is in no hurry to reveal Pierre or Chandler in the iconic Green Lantern costumes. Fortunately, a fan-favorite digital artist has imagined their rendition of the actors in their roles.
Digital artistBossLogicunveiled artwork featuring Pierre in costume as Green Lantern / John Stewart. The artwork depicts Pierre’s John Stewart using his Green Lantern ring to create a weaponized construct. For the uninitiated, a Green Lantern Corps member can use their ring to create any weapon or item through sheer willpower. This willpower is represented by bright green energy emitted from the ring, and the items created by it exist as long as the wearer can will it into being and they are only as powerful as the user. “I just want to see the dope constructs!” wrote BossLogic.
The fan response to Pierre’s casting has been largely positive. “He’s a great actor and fits the look to perfection. Some of the best casting I’ve seen in a while,” wrote @eldorado4. Another fan (@ocalexoc) reached out toDCU boss James Gunndirectly, tagging him and writing, “@jamesgunn please give the fans this, Homie @bosslogic getting down.” However, while they didn’t express any concern about Pierre’s casting, user @hydro88wrexpressed hope that the DCU’s Green Lantern show will be tonally similar to thePeacemakerseries. “I need the show to be just as nuanced and graphic as Peacemaker. GLs been looking soft as wet toilet paper in films,” they wrote.
This user’s concerns are not unfounded. While theJustice League Unlimitedanimated seriesarguably expanded John Stewart’s popularity beyond comic book readers, Green Lantern has a troubled history when it comes to live-action feature films. Ryan Reynolds’Green Lanternfilm is an infamous box office and critical bomb, one the actor continues to mock. Zack Snyder attempted to introduce John Stewart in his director’s cut ofJustice League, with Wayne T. Carr cast in the role for a single scene. However, Warner Bros. rejected the idea because they had their plans for the character and Snyder replaced John Stewart with Martian Manhunter.
TheLaternsTV serieswill feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a mystery on Earth. Fans have high expectations for both characters after the previous unsuccessful attempts to adapt them for a live-action feature film. Fortunately, Pierre and Chandler have demonstrated tremendous acting talent in the past, so fans should rest ready knowing these beloved Green Lantern characters are likely in good hands.
Lanternsis in pre-production at DC Studios.
