Horror games are designed to instill fear in any players who dare enter their haunted halls with atmosphere, audio, andmonster design. In some instances, players are offered the means to defend themselves as they explore the decrepit surroundings, and can even heal after incurring damage to protect themselves from the cold and unyielding grasp of death.

But not all developers practice the same mercy, and in certain games, every step welcomes the terrifying possibility of meeting their demise. The Last of Uswas a mighty success, smashing through everyone’s expectations and resulting in a true masterpiece. In a world where a fungal parasite transformed many humans into zombie-like creatures, leading to the collapse of society, humans have hunkered down in settlements to try and find something resembling a life. A glimpse of hope is seen in Ellie, a young girl who seems to be immune to the infection, and with her, it may be possible to synthesize a cure.

Their journey to deliver her to the doctors capable of creating a vaccine is a long and arduous one that will mean traversing through some truly dangerous locations inhabited by the infected creatures known as Clickers. These mushroom people garner their name from the clicking sounds they emit, which they use as a form of echolocation, as their disfigurementrenders them blindand terrifying to behold. If the players are unlucky enough to be grappled by one of these creatures, they may soon join them in death.

Outlastarrived on the scene in terrifying fashion back in 2013,terrifying players with its asylum settingand very scarce light. Players would spend most of their time as reporter Miles with their camera held up and in night-vision mode to see what horrors lay ahead in their path, unless they suffered the misfortune of running out of batteries…

Set during WW1, French soldier Henri flees from an enemy bombardment into what he assumed would be the safety and shelter of a bunker, only to find himself trapped in there with something far more dangerous than enemy forces. Known as the Beast, this creature thrives in its dark dwellings, killing anyone who has the misfortune of falling in its path. The darkness is the monsters ally, creating a dangerous and terrifying environment for the player. Light can possibly keep it at bay, but once they draw its ire, its lights out.

Based on the popular horror movie seriesit shares a name with,Alien: Isolationtakes place between the first and second movie, starring the daughter of Ellen Ripley as she searches for answers surrounding her mothers disappearance during her mission on the Nostromo. After hearing the flight recorder of the ship was salvaged and being held on the space station Sevastopol, she boards the station and finds more than she bargained with.

Alongside looters and androids, there is a much bigger threat that fans of the series dread to encounter: the xenomorph. This terrifying creature stalks through the structure, reacting to any noise it hears and bearing down on the source without mercy. Even with the flamethrower that can keep the creature at bay, it remains a deadly threat that is an immediate death sentence to the unprepared.

Nothing can ever be simple for Leon S Kennedy. What should have been a simple extraction mission turns into a nightmare for both him and his payload, Ashley Graham. As the daughter of the President, her safety is of the utmost importance, and only Leon stands between her and an armies of infected villagers. To get them both out safely, Leon will have to fight througha whole cornucopia of monsters, cultists, and ganados. As a trained agent, Leon has the expertise needed to handle most of them, though he meets his match when Dr Salvador arrives on the scene, revving his chainsaw. One of the fast-moving enemies, he is a terrifying example of just how dangerous these villagers can be, and if he gets too close, he can take Leon’s head clean off in just one swipe.
