The choices you make inUntil Dawnare essential inensuring the survival of all eight friendswho spend the night on Blackwood Mountain, and the Remake has added a new ending for Josh that’s called the “best ending.”
In the original, you could make sure Josh didn’t get killed by the enemies hunting down the group of friends, but his other fate was not something fans were particularly happy with either. In essence, it was not possible to give him any kind of happy ending, but Ballistic Moon decided to change that possibility in the Remake if you make the right choices along the way.

How to Save Josh
In the originalUntil Dawn, you had two choices. First, leave Josh to his fateto get his head crushed in by Hannah, or second, leave him in the mines. He would give in to the hunger of being stuck down there and eat the body of the Stranger (Flame-Thrower Guy), and he would turn into a Wendigo like his sister. The two options were quite grim, and fans have long since been asking for a different option to try and save him.
Now, with the Remake, this has finally been made possible. The original two endings are still available, of course, but it all depends on the choices you make. If you want to ensure that Josh doesn’t die or turn into a Wendigo, then you’re going to need to show some remorse for his actions.
When Josh is revealed as the Psycho who’s been tormenting his friends, his face will also be revealed as the person who’s been hallucinating and talking with Dr. Hill. In this scene, when the doctor asks “Why did you hurt them?”, you need torespond with “They hurt me.“Then, when the therapist berates him for the fact that this was not the way to go, you need toselect “I’m so sorry"when you get the next dialogue prompt.
The second thing you need to do is find Hannah’s diary when you’re down in the mines with Mike and Sam. When you reach the section where you need to climb in the water and wade your way out to find Josh, turn left before heading forward and continuing the story. Look for the large water wheel as your point of reference here, as the ledge is climbable before you pass it. There’s a small ledge here that you can climb up, and Hannah’s diary that she kept is just ahead of you on this small ledge.
Once Sam has read the diary, she will relay the information she found to Josh when she and Mike find him. This means that when you try and escape the mine with Mike and Josh gets grabbed by Hannah, she will recognize him, and she won’t kill him.
Previously, these were the steps you needed to followif you wanted to give Josh a chance, but then he would turn into a Wendigo. Now, though, it’s heavily implied that Josh is able to escape the mines at the end of the game. The scene now starts with a flashlight - who we can assume to be the police interviewing the group - shining on a door in the mines. You see the hanging body of the stranger, and the scene ends with Josh sitting and waiting for his rescue and redemption.
Because he shows remorse for what he did to his friends during his therapist session, and because Hannah recognized and did not kill him, he does not eat the body of the stranger and turn into a Wendigo, which is how this ended in the originalUntil Dawn.
