EAhas been on a bit of a game closure spree as of late. In the last 12 months, the American publisher shut down the online services for about 15 of its legacy games. Back in December 2023, it pulled the plug on the servers for various titles, includingBattlefield: Bad Company 1and2,Dante’s Inferno,Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, andDead Space 2. OtherEA-published releases also suffered the same fate in March of this year. Codemasters' isometric racing game,Micro Machine World Series, and Final Strike Games' little-known third-person shooter,Rocket Arena, were shuttered on the same day, alongside a couple of Xbox 360-eraF1games.
This unfortunate trend didn’t end there, though.EA announced throughout 2024 that it would be closing the serversof yet another batch of games. These included sports releases likeFIFA 22andNBA Live 18, in addition to classicBattlefieldtitles likeBattlefield 3,Battlefield 4, andBattlefield: Hardline.FIFA 22’s servers will be the first to bite the dust, as they’ll be shuttered on November 4. The other 4 games will be shut down shortly afterward, specifically on the 7th of the same month. EA recently confirmed thatThe Simpsons: Tapped OutandRory McIlroy PGA Tourwould also be closed in the near future, but the online support for these titles will come to an end in January 2025 instead.
EA Will Shut Down Two More of Its Legacy Games in January 2025
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is One of the Only EA Golf Games That’s Available on Modern Platforms
Out of the two games that are scheduled to be shuttered next year,Rory McIlroy PGA Touris probably the one that most people know the least about. Developed by EA Tiburon (now known as EA Orlando), it is the 23rd entry in thePGA Tourfranchise, EA’s long-running series ofgolf simulation games.Rory McIlroy PGA Tourwas released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 22, 2025, and it received middling critical reception. For some reason, the game never made its way to PC, so it’s one of the few multiplat eighth-generation console titles to not be available on the platform.
Speaking of “few,“Rory McIlroy PGA Touris also one of the few installments in thePGA Tourseries that’s currently playable on modern consoles. Every other title in the franchise, excluding 2023’sEA Sports PGA Tour, is stuck on an old generation of systems. Even afterthe servers forRory McIlroy PGA Tourget shut downon Jul 22, 2025, the game will fortunately still be accessible offline to those who own it. However, since some of its achievements and trophies require online multiplayer functionality, it will soon be impossible to platinum or earn 100% of the gamerscore forRory McIlroy PGA Tour.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out is a Popular Mobile Game That’s Been Around for 10+ Years
The Simpsons: Tapped Out, meanwhile, is a free-to-play city-builder that was released on mobile devices. It initially launched as an iOS exclusive in 2012, but it was eventually ported to Android and Amazon Fire tablets in 2013.The Simpsons: Tapped Outwas one of the more successfulSimpsonsgames of its time, having generated over $130 million dollars in revenue in just two years. In spite of this,TheSimpsons: Tapped Outis being delisted on October 31, rendering it inaccessible to those who haven’t already downloaded it. To make matters worse, when its servers are shut down on July 03, 2025,The Simpsons: Tapped Outwill become permanently unplayable due to it requiring an always-online internet connection.
The Closure of The Simpsons: Tapped Out is a Good Reminder That More Games Need Offline Modes
In an era where more and more games are lost to time due to server shutdowns, the closure of titles likeThe Simpsons: Tapped Outis especially bad for video game preservation efforts.Rory McIlroy PGA Tourand other games with offline modes can at least remain playable, even if their online multiplayer services are shuttered, but the same can’t be said for mobile titles that are dependent on the internet. As unlikely as it may be, it would be great ifEAadded an offline mode toThe Simpsons: Tapped Outso that it can be accessible to gamers for generations to come.
