This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
Summary
Jujutsu Kaisenconcluded recently, and it left many questions unanswered. There are many plot lines that fans were absolutely delighted to see conclude and receive a satisfying end, while quite a lot of others were left incomplete or in a state of ruin. Clearly, the author’s health took its toll on the final arc ofJujutsu Kaisen, but despite that, fans got a somewhat reasonable ending to his series. While opinion was always going to be split onJJK’sending, fans, at the very least, expected various intriguing bits of information from the story to be either fleshed out or properly explained.
One Of the many characters who was not dealt with properly in the Final Saga of JJK was none other than Uraume. Unfortunately, Uraume was very underwhelming in the final segment of the story, and fans would have absolutely loved to see more focus being thrown on this character. Among the many things that were not tackled by the author in regards to this individual was also their gender, which has not finally been confirmed.
Uraume And Sukuna’s Connection
Uraume and Sukuna Share A Deep Connection From The Heian Era
Uraume and Sukuna are two of the most influential characters inJujutsu Kaisen. Fans got to see them play an exciting role in the story together, especially in the final arc of the story.Uraume was reincarnated, just like Sukuna, and the strength of this individual was certainly magnificent, to say the least. The control they showcased over ice-related cursed techniques was absolutely sensational, and fans got a first-hand look at it in Shibuya. It was clear for the fans to see that Uraume shared a very solid bond with Sukuna. In fact, their loyalty to Sukuna was maintained even after a reincarnation was agreed upon. However, the reincarnation process was strictly different from what Sukuna did. While Sukuna turned himself into a cursed object, Uraume’s reincarnation was similar to those who took part in the Culling Game in the modern era. Despite a completely new body, the strength of this individual was still absolutely top-notch.
As far as their bond with Sukuna goes, it was certainly unbreakable. Towards the end of JJK, fans got a proper look at their relationship with Sukuna, and it was clear for the fans to see that they shared a very touching relationship. It almost felt like Uruame was a little sibling to Sukuna, or even a child. Sukuna, who absolutely despised the concept of love, always showed deep care towards Uraume, and that certainly adds depth to his character, as well as that of Uraume. It also explains why Uraume was always loyal to Sukuna right until the very end and was even ready to lay down their own life for this cause. Of course, fans were utterly disappointed by the ending that Uraume received, and much about this character remained unanswered in the story, including their gender.
Gege Clears The Mystery Behind Uraume’s Gender
Gege Confirms Uruame Was Originally A Male
Gegedesigned Uraume’s character in a waywhere it was hard for anyone to tell whether they were male or female. Of course, even if they were to lean more towards either, that would certainly not have been a confirmation of their gender anyway. As such, fans needed proper confirmation from the author and this character to be fleshed out in the story, given their relationship to Sukuna as his number 2. Unfortunately, that never happened and the series actually ended up destroying any potential that Uraume held.
Still, for what it’s worth, Uraume’s gender was finally tackled in the extra information that came with JJK’s Volume 27. Now, it has finally been cleared to the fans that Uraume was actually a male born in the Heian era, who was later reincarnated into a female body in the modern era, thanks to Kenjaku. Here is what Gege had to say about this individual:
The names of the players in the Culling Game are unified under the names of the humans they were before reincarnating. This is because the ones affected by the curse of the Culling Game are the bodies, not the cursed objects themselves. So, when Kenjaku didn’t call Hazenoki by his real name (?), Hazenoki felt a sense of discomfort, thinking, ‘You know my name.’
Uraume was originally male, but due to a contract with Kenjaku, they reincarnated into a female’s (Himi Shiori) body… Did I maybe mention this somewhere?
Uraume was clearly born as a male long ago. Now, this has finally been clarified by the author. However, it would have been much better if the author included it in the actual manga. Unfortunately, the worsening health of the author, especially during the final segmentof the Shinjuku Showdown arc, saw to it that many plot points had to be cut short, and several battles, including the main fight that was going on at the time, that is, the fight between Yuta and Sukuna, had to suffer as well.
How Gege Failed Uraume In The End
Uruame Was A Wasted Character In Jujutsu Kaisen
Among the many things that Gege failed to accomplish at the end ofJJKwas delivering the proper conclusion to Uraume. Fans saw Uraume fight against Kinji Hakariin the Shinjuku Showdown arc. Unfortunately, the author didn’t even care enough to elaborate upon this fight. Fans did get to see two or three panels of this battle across over a year of action, but that was it. Apart from that, readers did not get to see anything from Uraume me at all.
Fans were eagerly waitingto see Uraume and Hakari engage in a high-level battle, but that never came. This destroyed not just the reputation of Hakari but also Uraume. In the end, Uraume essentially self-destructed after Sukuna was defeated, simply because there was no reason for them to stay alive anymore. That said, Uraume also clarified to Hakari that it was their luck that allowed them to win. Had it not been a reincarnated body for Sukuna, there was absolutely no way that he would have lost to Yuji.
Do not be mistaken. You only won because of Master Sukuna’s incarnated state. – Uraume
Nonetheless, it is safe to say that Uraume’s ending was incredibly underwhelming, and the character was essentially ruined and remains to be one of the most underwhelming ones in the entirety of JJK. Hopefully, in volume 28, the author will add bits and pieces to Uraume’s character, either through extra information, or through additions to the chapters themselves. But, as things stand, their conclusion is certainly one of the worst ones in the story. Fans believe Uraume to be a wasted character, and the same can be said for Hakari as well, who was counted to be one of the greatest modern sorcerers, and considered by Gojo to be a very powerful individualwho could one day go on to reach levels similar to him. IfJJKever gets a sequel, perhaps, justice can be done to Hakari as well.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on July 14, 2025. Fans can read the series on theManga Plusand the Shonen Jump apps.
