This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

Summary

Megumi Fushiguro formed the main trio ofJujutsu Kaisen, alongside Yuji and Nobara, and fans could tell easily that this character held tremendous importance in the series right from the get-go. In fact, this character was written so well that he was consistently the most popular character among the fans ofJJK, which certainly goes to say a lot.

Everything about Megumi, from his demeanor, all the way to the powers that he held, made him incredibly exciting to the fans. Of course, during his journey as a sorcerer,Megumi faced many ups and downs, but, eventually, he certainly went on to become a powerful individual. Fans have been wondering as to how strong Megumi was at the end of his journey, and the answer to this question might surprise some.

Megumi tells Itadori and Nobara that he’s okay about Gojo’s letter.

Megumi Fushiguro’s Potential In Jujutsu Kaisen

When Megumi was first introduced in the story, he wasn’t all that powerful. At the moment, he was a grade 2 sorcerer, which was certainly nothing special. However, it is safe to say that Megumi proved that his strength was far beyond that of a Grade 2 sorcerer. In fact, it didn’t take Megumi long to fight and defeat a special-grade finger bearer, and he certainly did that with quite some style. Megumi was destined for greatness, and much of that is down to the fact that he was born in the Zenin Clan. Even among those of the Zenin, he was incredibly special, given that he had the inherited cursed technique of the 10 Shadows. Megumi had learned to utilize the 10 Shadows Technique to quite some degree at the beginning of the series, but, as time passed, this control only grew even further.

Megumi revealed his true strength in the story as it progressed, and it is safe to say that fans were utterly shocked by the level of potential that he carried. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to say that Megumi was destined to reach the uppermost tier of strength in JJK. Gojo, the strongest modern sorcerer, clearly stated that Megumi had the potential to equal him and that certainly goes to say a lot, given how strong Gojo truly was. According to Gojo, in the past, a sorcerer from the Zenin Clan, who had access to the 10 Shadows Technique, went head-to-head with the leader of the Gojo Clan, who, just like Gojo, had access to both the Six Eyes and the Limitless, and this battle resulted in the death of both of these individuals. Essentially, they were equally matched, and that just goes to show that Megumi could have reached a similar level to Gojo.

He was blessed with all the tools that he could have required, which meant that with time, fans would see great growth from him. It is safe to say that Megumi did progress quite a lot in Jujutsu Kaisen. For instance, when Megumi fought against a finger bearer, he managed to tap into his domain expansion by putting his life on the line. Megumi started to show signs of real growth, and it is safe to say that at this point, his proper evolution as a sorcerer began.

When the story continued into the Culling Game Arc,Megumi’s growth continued as well, and he once again showcased why he was a worthy contender for the future strongest. He was incredibly impressive in the Culling Game, fighting some of the most powerful Ancient Sorcerers. Megumi’s incredible performance was, however, cut short, when Sukuna transferred from Yuji Itadori to him, and essentially took over his body properly.

Megumi’s Stagnation In JJK Was A Case Of Deep Concern

Megumi Was Cut Out Of The Story

Once Sukuna transferred to Megumi, the stagnation of the latter began. Sukuna took a bath to essentially suppress the soul of Megumi, and from that point onwards, he couldn’t do much. In fact, it was a shocking decision for the author to cut out Megumi from a significant portion of the story and ensure that his growth stagnated.

For as long as Sukuna was in Megumi’s body, his entire character arc was sidelined. His connections to Tsumiki, Yuji, and all the others, along with all the dreams and hopes that he had were pushed to the side and he was simply used as a tool for Sukuna. This would have made for a fantastic plot point if there was more to come from Megumi in the future when he was freed from Sukuna’s clutches. But, the way Jujutsu Kaisen kaisen ended, Megumi was essentially a tool for half the story, and it certainly did ruin his character quite a bit. Fans had great expectations from Megumi, but all of that was simply destroyed in the story once Sukuna took over.

You’ve changed since I last saw you, Megumi! – Gojo

Sukuna used Megumi’s body effortlessly and had great control over not just his own Shrine, but Megumi’s 10 Shadows as well. Fans got to see Sukuna use incredible powers in his body, and he killed a multitude of sorcerers using these powers. In fact, Sukuna even clashed with Gojo Satoru, the strongest modern sorcerer, and held his own in this battle, which is a commendable feat. Eventually, it was thanks to Megumi’s Mahoraga that Sukuna was able to kill Gojo, and move forward with his plans. He then used Megumi’s body as a vessel to resume the suspended incarnation process and took his true form with Megumi at his core.

Again, this was an indication from the author that Megumi would not get to play any major role in the story ever again, and that is precisely what happened. In the end, Yuji and all the other sorcerers had to team up to free Megumi and deal with Ryomen Sukuna. Once Sukuna was dealt with by Yuji, Megumi finally returned. In the end, Yuji’s domain expansion proved to be a massive successand after the King of Curses was defeated, he was ripped from Megumi’s body.

Sukuna disintegrated into nothing, while Megumi was finally saved. After this point, the series only lasted for three or four more chapters, before Finally wrapping up. Clearly, Megumi did not get any chance to grow at all in the series, and all the potential that he had went to waste as well. But, the fact is that the author chose for the story to end despite knowing that it would ruin Megumi’s character, and went ahead with it anyway. That is not to say that Megumi could not have grown from this experience with Sukuna. Right now, he is certainly very strong, but the problem of his character arcs stagnating still remains.

How Megumi Could’ve Benefited From Being Sukuna’s Vessel

Megumi Could’ve Learned From Sukuna

It is safe to say that Megumi had his character arc ruined inJJKat the end. However, his time with Sukuna wasn’t all to waste. Spending time with Sukuna in the same body must have taught him quite a lot. For instance, when Sukuna used the shrine in Yuji’s body, it ensured that he got access to the Shrine as well, because Sukuna’s technique was deeply embedded in his body.

Now, there is certainly potential for Megumi to tap into the Shrine as well, but whether or not that will happen remains to be seen. Regardless, Megumi doesn’t need the Shrine to have grown from this experience. The fact is that Sukuna used the 10 Shadows Technique like a total master in Megumi’s body. Now, Megumi knows how to use the 10 Shadows Technique better. Megumi can now use things like fusion, and create beasts such as Agito.Megumi can potentially even control Mahoragamuch better than ever before and learn how to adapt to different circumstances, just as Sukuna did.

Whatever Sukuna used in Megumi’s body must come naturally to him through muscle memory, just as it did to Yuji. Unfortunately, fans will never get to see all that becauseJJKhas officially concluded, and there is no room for a sequel for now, either.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on July 05, 2025. Fans can read the series on theManga Plusand the Shonen Jump apps.
