Summary

The topic of the Cursed Wombs is established early inJujutsu Kaisen. Yuuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki battle the brothers Kechizu and Eso. After killing them, their older brother senses their death and commits to taking revenge on their killer. Chouso is the strongest of the Cursed Wombs: Death Paintings brothers, a powerful relative of the Kamo clan with their emblematic cursed technique, Blood Manipulation that far surpasses Kyoto’s Noritoshi Kamo. Choso battles Itadori but as he’s about to kill him, their blood comes into contact, revealing to Choso that just like him he’s an offspring of Kenjaku. Choso from then on dedicates himself to protecting Itadori as his brother.

Choso is one of the coolest characters in theJujutsu Kaisencast. He has a unique design combined with flashy, exciting powers. His bond with Itadori evolves throughout the series, and he’s set up to be a key player in the rest of the series. However, some fans feel displeased with the treatment he received by the end of the manga.

A Villain Turned Ally

A Loving Brother Through the End

Choso’s greatness comes from his surprisingly sincere writing. A common theme in Jujutsu Kaisen is the ambiguous morality of its characters,a lot of the supposed good guys are arguably selfish and corrupt people. While the bad guys are mostly pure evil. It seems like Itadori is the only truly good person in the series. That’s where Choso comes in. Choso believes in something else much more than any evil ambitions Kenjaku has, his brotherly love. Choso prioritizes his brothers more than anything in the world. After Kechizu and Eso are killed, he thinks of nothing else than avenging them. And when he discovers their killer is also a relative of his, he breaks down in confusion and guilt. And from that point he prioritizes Itadori’s safety, protecting him like a loving older brother.

Choso even deserted from Kenjaku’s side, proving his allegiance was never with him, but with his brothers. Choso stands out as a character who started as a villain but who was the complete opposite of the other curses. He’s different than most characters in the series. He has no grandiose goal of saving or destroying the world, his true ideals are protecting his family. In this aspect,he’s more similar to the protagonist, Yuuji Itadori. Showing that the two may indeed be brothers and more alike than they think.

So Much To Live Up To

A Beloved Character Cast Aside

During the Culling Games and the battle with Sukuna, Choso was seemingly left aside for most of the conflict. Besides his exciting battleagainst Kenjaku with the help of Yuki Tsukumo, Choso didn’t get a lot to do. In a manga like Jujutsu Kaisen where fights are so important, and not only that, but group fights are a core aspect of it, Choso didn’t get many opportunities to show his skills. He joined the fight against Sukuna in the end, but he could have done much more.

Choso was clearly a very powerful fighter, defeating Itadori and holding his own against Kenjaku and Sukuna during their group fights. His Blood Manipulation was strong enough to give Kenjaku trouble. He was always fun to watch in and out of fights. And yet, it feels that much like many other elements of the manga, Choso wasleft aside and mostly forgotten about, and his conclusion rushed.

Nonetheless, I must walk ahead of my little brothers. That’s why I’m strong.

Choso heroically sacrificed himself to save Itadori from Sukuna’s attack, fulfilling his personal goal to protect his brother. But right after Sukuna’s defeat, his death wasn’t properly acknowledged, and he didn’t receive any proper sendoff. Weirdly enough, it was the same for Satoru Gojo. It’s strange to see that author Gege Akutami seemingly didn’t care to give two of the most popular characters the treatment they deserved.

Choso had some fantastic fights, enticing writing and backstory, a distinct moral compass from the other characters, and flashy abilities. And yet, Akutami could have done so much more with such a cool character. Itadori’s loving older brother went out in a bittersweet way, while saving his brother, he didn’t get the acknowledgment he deserved.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Based on Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Mappa’s battle shonen anime envisions a world where Jujutsu Sorcerers battle against entities born out of Cursed Energy. One day, a teenager named Yuji Itadori is dragged into this conflict when he eats a possessed finger.
