Summary

One of the formerSpider-Manactors is reportedly making a comeback. Sony wants him in more Marvel films, other thanSpider-Man 4.

Multiple actors have playedSpider-Manin theMarvel Cinematic Universe(MCU). Tobey Maguire starred in Sam Raimi’sSpider-Mantrilogy –Spider-Man(2002),Spider-Man 2(2004), andSpider-Man 3(2007). Andrew Garfield also played the web-slinging superhero in Marc Webb’sThe Amazing Spider-Man(2012) andThe Amazing Spider-Man 2(2014). Garfield brought an emotional depth to Peter Parker as it focused on the character’s struggles. Tom Holland made the most appearances as Spider-Man in the MCU. He made his debut inCaptain America: Civil War(2016) and starred in three solo films –Spider-Man Homecoming(2017),Spider-Man: Far From Home(2019), andSpider-Man: No Way Home(2021). Maguire and Garfield joined Holland inNo Way Home, and there are rumors they might reunite again inSpider-Man 4. However, Marvel and Sony reportedly have bigger plans for one of the three actors.

Movie insider@MyTimeToShineHclaims that Garfield will have a “big role” inAvengers: Secret Wars. “Sony wants him back for more projects,” they claimed. The statement sparked rumors that Garfield’s third movie,The Amazing Spider-Man 3,might just happen. Garfield was initially set to star in another film, but it was canceled due to several factors, including the underperformance ofThe Amazing Spider-Man 2. The outcome pressured Sony financially, which had ambitious plans around the film. They had announced multiple films and spin-offs, includingThe Amazing Spider-Man 3,The Amazing Spider-Man 4,The Sinister SixandVenom.

If the report was true, it could happen because Garfield was open to reprising his superhero role. Garfield admitted toEsquirethat his return to the franchise inNo Way Homewas “really healing” because his participation was “left dangling” after his third solo movie was scrapped. He also gave a positive response when asked if he was open to returning to theMCU. “For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into,” he said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

Garfield is no doubt a talented actor and many still love seeing him in his superhero costume, considering the abrupt end of his era. In fact, many are still campaigning forThe Amazing Spider-Man 3. There were rumors that Garfield and Sony’s relationship was strained. In 2014, Garfield was supposed to attend a key event in Rio de Janeiro to announce his nextSpider-Manfilm but failed to make it due to an alleged illness. The Sony executives were reportedly upset and prompted to move away from the said iteration. In 2015, Sony and Marvel Studios landed a deal to allowSpider-Manin the MCU, with the latter having creative control over the character’s portrayal while the former retained the film rights. The deal resulted in the introduction of Holland as the newSpider-Man. Fans were happy to seeHolland, Maguire and Garfield inSpider-Man 3and the warm reception was a hint that the formerSpider-Manactors were still welcome to the franchise.

So, yes, Garfield has a bright future in the MCU. And with the actor showing interest in the role given the right story and plot, there’s no stopping from seeing more of him in the upcoming Marvel movies, includingAvengers: Secret Wars.
