When it was released exclusively on the PlayStation 5 in 2023,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2quickly became one of the year’s biggest hits. Like its predecessor, the game launched to near-universal critical acclaim. On review aggregator OpenCritic, for example, it garnered a Top Critic Average of 90, with 97% of outlets recommending the game. Reviews for the title were so glowing, in fact, that it was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Additionally,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2sold around 2.5 million units 24 hours after its October 20 launch, making it the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game ever made at the time. Sony later announced in April 2024 that the game had sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, which was especially impressive considering it was only available on one platform.
Spider-Man 2will likely surpass the sales milestone it’s currently reached, as the title will soon be accessible on more devices than ever before. During New York Comic Con 2024,Insomniac revealed thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2would finally be coming to PCon May 31, 2025, roughly 15 months after its initial release. This marks the shortest PlayStation exclusivity period for aSpider-Mangame yet, as previous entries in the franchise took around 2 to 4 years to hit Steam and Epic Games Store. Alongside this surprising announcement, however, Insomniac also confirmed thatSpider-Man 2would not receive any story DLC. While it’s great that PC players will be able to get their hands on the game sooner than expected, the lack of a content roadmap forSM2may dampen the excitement for its upcoming port.
The Reveal of Spider-Man 2’s PC Port Came With an Unfortunate Announcement
Fans Were Hoping that Insomniac Would Release Story DLC for Spider-Man 2
For months, many fans assumed that Insomniac would eventually release some narrative-driven DLCs forSpider-Man 2. After all, there was ample reason to believe it would happen. The debut installment in the developer’s web-slinging series,Marvel’s Spider-Man, received three story expansions shortly after its 2018 launch. This compilation of paidSpider-ManDLCs, titledThe City That Never Sleeps, was released on a monthly basis in an almost-episodic format. The first of these three expansions launched in October 2018, while the conclusion to the trilogy came out in December of that year.
Some Spider-Man 2 DLCs Were Apparently in Development At One Point
Judging from the precedent Insomniac set with the originalMarvel’sSpider-Man, it didn’t seem like a stretch to assume thatSpider-Man 2would receive a similar collection of story expansions as well. As fans now know, though, that isn’t happening. However, based off the internal documents that were leaked fromthe devastating ransomware attack that hit Insomniac in December 2023, it appears that there were plans to make a trilogy ofSpider-Man 2DLCs at one point in time. UnlikeThe City that Never Sleeps, these DLCs were apparently going to be free, just like howGod of War Ragnarok: Valhallawas available toGoW:Ragnarokowners at no extra charge.
The three planned expansions forSpider-Man 2were reportedly calledBeetle Infestation,Extreme Carnage, andSpider-Verse Anomaly. Their names effectively gave away their premises.Beetle Infestationcentered around Janice Lincoln, the quick-footed supervillain who went by the alias Beetle.Extreme Carnage, meanwhile, was presumably about the blood-red Symbiote Carnage, andSpider-Verse Anomalyamounted to a crossover with Sony’s recent animatedSpider-Versemovies. These DLCs were seemingly going to be pretty small in scope and only contain a single mission each.Beetle InfestationandExtreme Carnagewould’ve included individual boss fights, whileSpider-Verse Anomalywould’ve featured aSpider-Verse-themed visual filter.
The Cancelation of Spider-Man 2’s DLC is a Shame, But At Least a PC Port is On the Way
It’s unclear whythese rumoredSpider-Man 2story expansions were canceled. It’s possible that Insomniac and Sony concluded it just wasn’t worth the financial investment to make free DLC forSM 2and that, even if they were behind a paywall, they weren’t substantial enough to charge money for. Regardless of the reason, though, it is a shame that these expansions will never see the light of day. At the very least, fans do have theMarvel’s Spider-Man 2PC port to look forward to.
