High Voltage mode, a limited time event running from October 16 to October 24, will bring a new play style to the competitive card gameMarvel Snap.Players must earn victory across only three turns, cannot Snap to potentially double their points, and will draw two cards per turn while earning between 2-5 energy each time. Because High Voltage mode isso different from standardMarvel Snap, certain cards will not be able to be played in this mode, while others less frequently used may prove more valuable than before.

Game Rant spoke toMarvel Snapdesign director Ben Hayes, who is beyond excited about High Voltage mode. He discussed how the team came up with the three-turn limit and variable energy scale. He also revealed which three character cards are officially banned in High Voltage matches, as well as those he thinksMarvel Snapplayersmight be able to make greater use of during the limited-time mode, which is available between October 16 and October 24.

Three Characters And Several Locations Are Banned In High Voltage Mode

Because High Voltage mode is only three turns long per match, any Location cardthat only affects the game on Turn 4 or later will not appear. In addition, the Location Limbo, which extends the game to seven turns, is not allowed. “We don’t want to go from a three-turn game to a seven-turn game,” Hayes joked, laughing at even the thought of such a game occurring.

Three character cards are also banned in the game: Magik, Galactus, and Black Widow. Hayes described the first two’s exclusion as “obvious,” but Black Widow’s as less so. Ultimately, Hayes explained, the developers found “skipping a turn of drawing cards was really punishing and really wrecked [players'] whole plan.” The effects of the three banned cards are:

One card which is - possibly surprisingly - not banned isAgatha Harkness, who plays cards instead of the player on even turns. Hayes does acknowledge that Harkness will be particularly chaotic in High Voltage mode, noting that she will likely “attempt to spend as much of [players'] increased energy as she can.”

Some Cards May See More Frequent Use In High Voltage

n the other hand, Hayes thinks several cards will be more valuable in High Voltage mode. He cites high-cost cards like Black Panther, Doctor Doom - whose Doom Bots can sometimes clinch a last-second victory - and others as less risky to play with fewer turns and more energy. In particular, Hayes hopes that players will useHydra Bob, a card who moves locations when a Snap occurs - something that will not occur in High Voltage matches. He says:

Oh, wait, and you should definitely play Hydra Bob, because Hydra Bob has no downsides in this mode. I don’t think Hydra Bob is going to be in every deck, but it’s a very good card. It’s better than it is in normalSnap.

Overall, however, Hayes is mostly excited to see what decks and combinations players come up with in High Voltage mode. He thinks that the faster-paced game will encourageMarvel Snapplayers who are usually more conservative when building decks to experiment with combinations they might not otherwise try. He’s also eager to see how Agony, the new card available as a reward for playing High Voltage matches, will make its way into theMarvel Snapmeta in the future.
