During the recent October Xbox Partner Preview Event, Microsoft revealed a handful of brand-new games from third-party developers both big and small, including one calledMistfall Hunter. Billed as a third-person action PvPvE extraction RPG, this title is being developed by Bellring Games, an independent studio situated in Hong Kong. Bellring Games' name may not ring any bells for most gamers, but that’s becauseMistfall Hunteris the company’s first-ever project. It is currently slated to launch onXbox Series X/Sand PC sometime in 2025, but other potential platforms and a specific release date have yet to be announced.

Mistfall Huntertakes place in a dark fantasy world, one that’s been ravaged by a war between “gods and outer gods,” as the developers describe it. In this brutal setting, all the deities have died, and the blood from their corpses has turned into a deadly, soul-corrupting force called the Gyldenmist, which drives insane any living being who comes into contact with it and transforms them into grotesque monsters. A few humans have managed to survive in this Gyldenmist-covered land, and with the help of a mystical woman named Dew, are able to fight back against the Gyldanized creatures that plague their world. The general premise ofMistfall Hunteris pretty intriguing, but what’s especially unique about the title is its gameplay, which shares a lot in common withgames likeElden RingandDark and Darker.

Mistfall Hunter is Like Elden Ring Meets Dark and Darker

Mistfall Hunter is a Third-Person Action Game With a Heavy Focus on RPG Mechanics

As previously mentioned,Mistfall Hunteris one big mash-up of genres. It features co-op multiplayer, PvP, and role-playing elements, among other things. At its core, though, it is a third-person action game.Mistfall Hunterplaces players in the shoes of warriors known as Gylden Hunters, who can use an array of weapons and magic abilities in combat. Before heading into battle, gamers can customize their gear, modify their skills, and choose their classes. While each class in the game does have its own distinct weapons and abilities, some of them allow players to wield multiple weapons at once, which they can easily swap between during combat.

The Gameplay in Mistfall Hunter Seems Reminiscent of Elden Ring and Other Soulslikes

Bellring Games hasn’t outright stated as such, butMistfall Hunter’s gameplay does seem to have some Soulslike DNA in it. Like many other titles in the genre, the game features a wide variety ofchallenging boss enemies, from fallen heroes to powerful demigods, that players must defeat to collect valuable treasures that will aid them in their future endeavors. This aspect ofMistfall Hunter, coupled with its emphasis on class-building and RPG mechanics, gives the title some strongElden Ringvibes, even though it lacks the open world-level design of FromSoftware’s magnum opus.

Mistfall Hunter is an Extraction Game, Like Dark and Darker

What makesMistfall Hunterparticularly unique among thedozens and dozens of Soulslikes on the market, though, is that it features extraction gameplay elements. After killing enemies and collecting treasures with the help of up to two friends, players must defeat a rare foe called the Returner Woodling in order to receive the Soul of Return, an item that will send them back to their home camps safely after clearing each area. The problem is, in order to take the loot they collected with them, gamers need to do all of this without dying a single time. If a Gylden Hunter is killed during a mission, whether by Gyldanized creatures or fellow players, they lose all the valuable items they gathered.

Normally, the extraction genre is reserved for first-person shooters, likeEscape from TarkovorHunt: Showdown, butMistfall Hunteris one of the few extraction games out there with both a third-person perspective and what appears to be Soulslike-style combat. The title’s dark fantasy setting does, however, bring to mindDark and Darker, which is a recent PvPvE game that’s also centered entirely around extracting loot from dangerous dungeons. Judging from what Bellring Games has shared so far,Mistfall Hunterseems to combine the elements of bothDark and DarkerandEldenRingto create a unique gameplay experience.
