Ryan Murphyconfirmed whyMonstersseason 3 would be focused onEd Geinin aninterview with Collider. He stated that it all came about after discussions with co-creator, Ian Brennan, about howGein was the first American serial killer to become a celebrity.Murphy pointed out that Gein’s horrific crimes had influenced several iconic horror movies, and he was intrigued by the origin story of the “Butcher of Plainfield”.

After we did Menendez, Ian and I were talking about it, and we were interested in this idea of, ‘Where did our cultural interest in serial killers begin? Where and how did this all start?’ Based on our research, the very first one who became a celebrity at that level was Ed, who was an instant crazy celebrity from the moment he was arrested. Nobody had ever heard of anything like that. Then we found out he was motivated, obviously, but he was schizophrenic. How he became what he became was a very interesting story.

Ed Gein Really Was The Original Monster, So It’ll Be Interesting To See His Story Unfold On Netflix

Season 3 of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series based on famous serial killers is different to the first two outings, as it doesn’t name the killer in the title. However, it will still be based on a particular killer, and this time the focus is on Ed Gein, the monster who started it all, hence the title ‘The Original Monster.’

We’re calling that seasonThe Original Monsterbecause that’s kind of what he was. We start shooting on Halloween, so we’re deep in it, and I’m very excited about it.

The title of the third season is so apt because the Netflix show is all about discussing the impact of serial killers on pulp culture.Well, Ed Gein was the sick pioneer of that in many ways.

The amazing thing that the show talks about is how many villains and how much pop culture is based on Ed Gein.Psycho,Silence of the Lambs,Texas Chainsaw Massacre,American Psychoand on and on and on and on. Ed influenced a lot of things in the past 100 years, and this season is a very interesting season to work on because it asks the question, ‘How did we get so interested in this and why? Where did it all begin?

It sounds liketrue crime drama,Monstersseason 3 is covering the most important subject so far, with Ed Gein being the inspiration for how serial killers have been depicted in Hollywood for decades. What is fascinating and disturbing in equal measure, is the broad nature of Ed Gein’s crimes. He is a manifestation of Norman Bates, while also possessing the sick traits of Leatherface and Hannibal Lecter. However, the most disturbing aspect of Gein, was that he could put on a mask of normality, while being anything but.Charlie Hunnamis the perfect actor to take on this role, and it’ll be exciting to see how the project progresses.
