Summary
At the start ofMy Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Koichi had what can be described as a mediocre Quirk with the only ability to glide across the ground at a less-than-impressive speed. However, as Koichi begins to take on stronger opponents, his Quirk evolves at an increasing rate.
Koichi’s Quirk, Slide and Glide were possibly underdeveloped due to his mother swatting him as a baby out of fear Koichi would float away. However, when facing stressful situations daily and gaining more experience, Koichi’s Quirk constantly evolved to the point that it is a mere shadow of what it used to be.
Who is Koichi?
An aspiring Pro Hero who has taken to the streets of Naruhata doing vigilante work
HaimawariKoichi was a former vigilantethat lived in the Naruhata district of Tokyo. Koichi has always fantasized about becoming a Pro Hero, and like many aspiring heroes, he also idolizes All Might. As a vigilante, Koichi has made a name for himself in the Naruhata district as The Crawler.
Although Koichi aspired to become a Pro Hero, hisQuirk was not powerfulenough for him to make a difference in battle. When Koichi first began his journey as a vigilante, he was not strong enough to take down villains on his own and often required the assistance of Pop Step and Knuckleduster until the Pro Heroes made their way to the crime scene.
Koichi learns more about his Quirk
Koichi may have been subconsciously suppressing his Quirk from a young age
After meeting Knuckleduster, Koichi could train his body and martial arts, which, in turn, allowed him to evolve his Quirk. Koichi’s Quirk is called Slide and Glide. To use his Quirk, Koichi must touch the ground in three places. In Chapter 31, Koichi states that his Quirk has a repelling force, which allows him to glide. At the start of the series, Koichi’s Quirk speed was as fast as a bike. As Koichi lives in Naruhata, which has recently dropped in foot traffic due to the expressway, Koichi is able to train his Quirk in the mornings, and from Chapter 7, Koichi finally learns how to break with his Quirk.
Only in Chapter 18 does Koichi learn the truth of his Quirk. When Koichi was a baby, he could float with his Quirk. However, his mother would swat him with her Fly Swatter Quirk to prevent him from using this Quirk as a baby. Consequently, this frequent swatting may have been the reason Koichi forgot this ability of his Quirk.
How did Koichi’s Quirk Evolve?
Through daily battles, Koichi’s battle experience on the defensive allowed his Quirk to evolve
Throughout the series, Koichi’s Quirk begins to experience an awakening and evolve. Unlike many others who experienced theirQuirk awakening in a near-death experiencelike Bakugo Katsuki andUraraka Ochaco, Koichi’s Quirk had a slower evolution. For a Quirk to awaken, the user must undergo an intensive, stressful emotion or life-threatening situation.
Koichi did not receive any formal training in martial arts before meeting Knuckleduster. Additionally, Koichi would be worse for wear in many situations after taking down Instance Villains. However, this is also one of the reasons Koichi’s Quirk was able to evolve. Koichi received the best kind of training for any Pro Hero to be, which is on-the-scene training.
As Koichi was still finding his preferred fighting style, he was often on the defensive when apprehending villains. However, this approach worked in his favor as Koichi quickly evolved his Quirk, although unbeknownst to him. In Chapter 108,All For Onenotes how Koichi could evolve his Quirk so quickly because of the abundant experience Koichi has gained when apprehending villains.
Although Koichi was not in life-threatening situations, it’s possible each time he apprehended a villain, it was a stressful situation for him, which allowed Koichi’s Quirk to evolve at an impressive rate. From just gliding on the road, Koichi can now float in the sky, cling to walls, and fire force blasts from his palms. Additionally, Koichi’s Quirk also allows him to create a defensive barrier around the area that is being targeted, and ultimately, Koichi’s Quirk Slide and Glide is vastly different from what it once was.
Koichi’s previous experiences as a vigilante have allowed him to evolve his Quirk at a staggering rate. As the majority of Koichi’s experience has been from apprehending villains daily, Koichi was able to train not only his reflects but also his Quirk as each new encounter allowed Koichi to manifest a new ability from his Quirk.
All of Koichi’s prior experiences withthe Villain Factoryhave allowed his Quirk to evolve much more quickly. As mentioned above, Koichi could float as a baby; however, he forgot about this ability with time. As a result, it’s likely Koichi’s Quirk could always accomplish these feats, and it was merely a matter of unlocking his potential. However, it’s possible that psychological factors and his mother’s swattingprevented Koichi from evolving his Quirk.
The difference between Koichi’s Quirk evolution and others
Koichi’s Quirk is constantly evolving, contrary to a singular new ability manifestation
InMy Hero Academia, the way characters experience their Quirk awakening is vastly different from that of Koichi. As mentioned before, one must experience a life-or-death or stressful situation for a Quirk to awaken.Bakugo Katsuki’s Explosion Quirk awakenedwhen Midoriya Izuku’s life was in danger, and Uraraka’s Quirk awakened after Toga fatally stabbed her.
Although their Quirk awakened, it only gave them a new ability. On the other hand, Koichi’s Quirk was able to evolve constantly. Each time he responded to a villain or situation, his Quirk would evolve, giving him new abilities, each different from the next. At the start of theMy Hero Academia: Vigilantesseries, Koichi’s Quirk was mediocre at best. However, near the end of the series, Koichi Quirk has evolved to the point of being able totake on Number 6all by himself. With this experience and his new abilities, Koichi became the sidekick to Captain Celebrity in America.
