Summary

The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia, the 7th season of which is currently airing onCrunchyroll.

Mirai Sasaki(Hero Name: Sir Nighteye | Quirk: Foresight)was a Pro Hero and the mentor to U.A. High Big Three member Mirio Togata(Hero Name: Lemillion | Quirk: Permeation), and aformer sidekick to All Might. His work as All Might’s sidekick was so vital, he was considered the brains behind the #1 Hero. He was a level of All Might otaku that could rival even the enthusiasm of series protagonist Izuku Midoriya(Hero Name: Deku | Quirk: One For All, 9th Gen).

Sir Knighteye’s Foresight Quirk in Action – My Hero Academia

Sir Nighteye was cold and pragmatic at first glance, a temperament most likely arising from the potentially devastating nature of his Quirk, which granted him the ability to see anyone’s future from a third-person perspective. Here’s how Sir Nighteye’s Foresight worked.

The Curse of Precognition

Sir Nighteye’s Predictions Were Only Ever Wrong Twice

Put simply, Sir Nighteye can look at a person and see their future from the perspective of a bystander witnessing it unfold. The overwhelming accuracy of these predictions made him believe that the futures he witnessed were inevitable, even if he tried everything in his power to avoid the events he foresaw. The ability was activated through sight and touch, so Nighteye would have to touch and make eye contact with the target, and it had a massive cooldown time of 24 hours per activation.

He saw All Might’s gruesome deathat the hands of All For One, and during the Shie Hassaikai arc, foresaw Deku’s death in the battle against Shie Hassaikai leader Kai Chisaki(Villain Name: Overhaul | Quirk: Overhaul). However, as we know now, neither event took place. In Deku’s situation, Eri’s use of her Quirk to rewind time for Deku proved to be the difference, as the 9th generation wielder of One For All defeated the Yakuza boss and saved Eri shortly before Sir Nighteye’s own death. There seems to have been no limit to how far forward in the future Nighteye could see, as his prediction about All Might’s death seemed to be set several years in the future.

My Hero Academia

The ability could prove to be useful in preventing major catastrophes, but the fact that it was always accurate in its predictions made Nighteye develop a sense of fear around using his Quirk. In pureMy Hero Academiafashion, Nighteye’s name ties in with his abilities, with “Sasaki” being written with the character for “help” and anoma;a kanji that indicates repetition, and “ki” as in tree, a kanji found in a number of Japanese family names, which ties in with his role as All Might’s sidekick. His first name,“Mirai”, literally means “future”.

Deku’s triumph over the horrible future that Sir Nighteye saw is proof that the precognition has limits, and the future can be changed in ways that Nighteye could never have thought of, but it is also not a Quirk that grants its user infinite wisdom because they can see the future that others cannot. Sir Nighteye was strongly against the enlistment of a Quirkless Deku to be the next wielder of the One For All Quirk, because he believed that there were countless other candidates more suitable than him. He was obviously proven wrong, not only in the Overhaul fight, but the ultimate battle against All For One as well, so as much as there’s no limit to the future that Nighteye could see, it is possible that the Quirk was in part limited by his own preconceptions.

My Hero Academia

In My Hero Academia, Young Deku is born into a world where people commonly have something called quirks, also known as superpowers. He himself is born without any, but circumstances lead to that changing. He enrolls at the UA High School, a prestigious academy where the worlds future heroes learn how to use their powers.
