Aoyama Yuga has always been an eccentric character inMy Hero Academia. At first, Aoyama’s character could be attributed to wanting to shine the brightest; hence, his hero name, Can’t Stop Twinkling.Like Midoriya, Aoyama was born Quirkless; however, unlike Midoriya, Aoyama’s family was quite wealthy.
Aoyama’s parents were aware of the prejudice faced by Quirkless individuals. They were concerned that Aoyama would be treated differently, and all they wished for was Aoyama’s happiness. This was when they came across a rumor that Aoyama would be able to receive a Quirk for free, and thus, they were able to contact All For One. At the time, they believed this Quirk would be at no cost, and therefore, they came to live comfortably.
However,All For Onesoon contacted the Aoyama family anddemanded Yuga enroll in UA High School. In Chapter 425, Aoyama confesses that All For One ordered him to enroll; thus, it is likely that Aoyama never considered becoming a hero and only wanted to live comfortably with his parents. Out of fear due to All For One’s retaliation, Aoyama would become the UA spy, giving All For One the required information.
Although enrolling in UA was a choice All For One made for Aoyama, after enrolling inthe heroics departmentand building bonds with Class A, Aoyama likely wanted to become a hero out of his own violation. This is also likelywhy Aoyama contributed little during the prior arcsand why Ida gave him a pep talk during the Provisional Hero License Exam arc. However, throughout the series, Aoyama takes his training more seriously.

Aoyama and his family played a crucial role in the Final War against All For One, Tomura Shigaraki, and the League of Villains. To receive information about Midoriya Izuku and All Might, Aoyama was the source of information at UA High School. Although it was unknownwho the traitor and spy had been at the time, after Aoyama and his family were revealed to be All For One’s spies, UA quickly realized this was their way of gaining information about All For One and luring him into a trap.
Previously, each battle with All For One and Shigaraki had been on the villains' terms, and it was up to the heroes to defend and protect the citizens. However, All Might, Tsukauchi,and Eraser headfound a way to separate All For One andthe League of Villainsin the Final War.
With the assistance of Hitoshi Shinso, who had previously been tirelessly traininghis Brainwashing Quirkto overcome his limits, they could use Brainswash to fool All For One into believing Aoyama had brought Midoriya into their rendezvous location. However, this was a setup to separate all the villains to provide a situation and battle best suited for the heroes. Aoyama’s role in the Final War was not taken lightly. He provided the ideal situation to catch All For One off guard and provide the heroes with an advantageous situation that immensely assisted them throughout the battle. Aoyama also contributed significantly to the Final Waralongside Hagakure Toru.
As previously mentioned, Aoyama only became a UA student as All For One instructed him to do so. After the graduation ceremony and Class A became second years, Aoyama announced he would be leaving UA High School. Aoyama still felt immense guilt for his part in All For One’s scheme. Although Aizawa Shota and Tsukauchi gave Aoyama the green light to remain a UA High School student, due to Aoyama’s guilt, he felt unworthy to stay in UA.
Although he was previously ordered to enter UA High School, Aoyama truly wished to become a Hero after atoning for his sins. Eight years after Aoyama left UA, in Chapter 430, he was seen with the rest of Class A as a Pro Hero.
How Did His Traitor Status Affect His Ability to Become a Hero?

After enrolling in UA High School, the guilt of being the spy for All For One was always on his mind. Aoyama lived in fear daily, fearing All For One would retaliate against his parents and himself if he did not fulfill his orders. In Chapter 337, Aoyama confesses he fell into the deepest pits of despair during this time.
After creating bonds with Class A, Aoyama continued to feel guilty about his actions, as he had seen firsthand how they affected him. Although Aizawa and Tsukauchi absolved him of his crimes after the Final War, Aoyama still wanted to make amends by leaving UA High School. Although Aoyama was no longer in a prestigious school, he was still determined to become a hero after atoning for his crimes.
