My Hero Academia: You’re Next Showcases Dark Might in New Clip

Ahead of the film’s theatrical premiere in the United States, Toho International shared a newMy Hero Academia: You’re Nextclip, which Game Rant can exclusively reveal. The sub-minute video shows the moment when Izuku Midoriya and his friends first lay their eyes on the movie’s villain, who is revealed to be Dark Might. Much like his name implies, the antagonist looks like a younger version of Toshinori Yagi, better known as All Might, Midoriya’s idol and the former world’s greatest hero in theMy Hero Academialore.

While the shock of this reveal is still sinking in, the protagonists speculate that Dark Might cannot actually be All Might, but merely someone who looks and sounds like his younger self. To drive this point home, Christopher Sabat plays both characters in the movie’s English dub, while Kenta Miyake does the same in the Japanese original. How and why does Dark Might resemble the group’s legendary mentor is something that theplot ofMy Hero Academia: You’re Nextpromises to explore.

Despite being fairly short, the clip still manages to showcase some of the movie’s cinematography sensibilities. E.g., after Dark Might reveals himself, there is an extended sequence—starting around the 33-second mark—where the camera slowly pans, gradually shifting him away from the left corner of the frame. It then cuts to a scene where a view of Midoriya moves in the opposite direction, creating a juxtaposition with the previous shot. The way the two characters start stuck in a corner of the frame communicates claustrophobia, uncertainty, and tension, thus being quite anxiety-inducing, which was ostensibly the director’s intention.

My Hero Academia: You’re Nextpremieres in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 11. The upcoming movie is just one part of theincredibly stacked fall 2024 anime lineup, which also includesFureru,Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack, and numerous other releases.
