Portkey Games is the label that has overseen theHarry Pottervideo games since 2018, starting with the release ofHarry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.Hogwarts Mysterywas followed by 2019’sWizards Unite, 2020’sPuzzles & Spells, 2023’sHogwarts Legacy, and most recently, 2024’sQuidditch Champions. In 2021, Portkey GameslaunchedHarry Potter: Magic Awakenedin China and Taiwan, giving franchise fans the chance to try out a collectible card game/RPG hybrid. Set 10 years after the end of the books,Magic Awakenedproved popular enough to bring it to other regions, with the game finally getting its worldwide release in 2023.
Unfortunately, a little over a year afterHarry Potter: Magic Awakened’s global launch,the game is shutting down everywhereexcept China and Taiwan.Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedis shutting down on October 29, and so anyone interested in playing the game should be sure to check it out while they still can. A reason whyHarry Potter: Magic Awakenedis being shut down has not been revealed. It’s possible the game simply doesn’t generate enough money outside of China and Taiwan to justify its continued support.
When is Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Shutting Down?
Something else that could play a role is the fact thatHarry Potter: Magic Awakenedhas a different publisher in China and Taiwan. In China and Taiwan,Harry Potter: Magic Awakenedis published by NetEase. Everywhere else, Warner Bros. Games is the publisher. Whatever reason Warner Bros. would have for shutting down the game is still unclear, but regardless,Harry Potterfans outside of China and Taiwan have been warnedthat October 29 is the last day that they will get to play the game.
Some fans of the game haven’t given up hope. AHarry Potter: Magic Awakenedpetition has been madeon Change.org asking Warner Bros. Games to let NetEase pick up the publishing rights in regions outside of China and Taiwan, with the hope that such a move will keep the game live and operational. The petition generated over 5,000 signatures, but no plans to save the game have been announced.
This isn’t the first time that a mobileHarry Pottergame has been shut down, and it’s unlikely to be the last. Previously,Harry Potter: Wizards Unitewas shut down, despite the fact that it was made by the extremely successful developer ofPokemon GO, Niantic. No plans to terminate the otherHarry Pottermobile games have been announced at the time of this writing, but shutdowns are always a risk when it comes to mobile gaming.
