Summary
Thunderbolts*is well on its way to hitting screens, but one of its main stars has recently revealed that they had a particularly interesting issue on the set of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project that fans are sure to find amusing as well.
Thunderboltshas seen its stock rise in recent times, with the fall of Jonathan Majors and his Kang character at Marvel Studios decentering the mainline Multiverse saga long enough for more grounded projects to shine through on Disney+ and in theaters. While fans are eagerly awaiting the release ofDaredevil: Born Againon the streamer,Thunderboltsnow has eyes on its team of misfit antiheroes and the intrigue that the promotional material promises. While there are still a few secrets about the cast and plot left in the leadup to the film, one of the most notable members of the cast is the fan-favorite Sebastian Stan, whohas shown his acting range as a villain in the pastand, more recently, as an MCU hero on par with any Avenger.
Sebastian Stan, FollowingThe ApprenticePerformance, Can’t Get Rid of Donald Trump
While evenStan himself thought he was done as Bucky afterCaptain America, the actor and character have been brought back for both Disney+ and the big screen, with Stan set to headlineThunderboltsalongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. However, his time on set working on the upcoming antihero ensemble did pose a bit of an issue, as the man himself confessed recently. At the tail end of his recent interview withGQconcerning his upcoming project,The Apprentice,Stan revealed that his role as a younger iteration of former President of the United States Donald J. Trump in that project managed to work its way into his time on set forThunderbolts.
“I went off to Marvel after [The Apprentice]. And we were doing scenes, and I would do something, a thing or two, and be like, ‘F***! This is still living somewhere.”
The star also discussed how he tried out his new Presidential improvisation in random restaurants, his attitudes towards backlash, and his desire to work with Robert Downey Jr. in his new role as the MCU’s Victor Von Doom.
Stan’s Work As Donald Trump May Bleed Into Next Winter Soldier Appearance
The former President and current Republican Presidential nominee is well-known for having a unique set of mannerisms in the way he speaks and gesticulates that Stan worked very hard to replicate in an era-appropriate fashion. By his own admission, Stan put on some weight and poured over hours of video footage spread out over more than 600 unique files to not only embody the character’s physicality but also learn to speak like him even off script. While that sort of dedication is amazing for the project, fans can imagine that it’s not an easy frame of mind to leave behind once the cameras stop rolling.
As such, there might be moments when the former Winter Soldier seems a little different, an issue that probably wasn’t made easier by Bucky’s involvement with the US Government in the MCU. While the star is still set to appear in this role inCaptain America: Brave New World,a project whichStan compares to the Rocky films, in February next year before the premiere ofThunderbolts*in May, the filming schedules didn’t fall in order in quite the same way, so his performance in the former was not impacted.
With the newfound goodwill that the MCU has after the release ofDeadpool & Wolverineand the potential forBrave New Worldto really change the way people view the franchise,Thunderbolts*can still avoid just being the MCU’sSuicide Squadand do all sorts of good for the franchise, especially in the ongoing quest for more grounded storylines within the MCU. Stan’s performance will be a key part of the film’s success or failure, so fans should see his deep dive into his other role as indicative of how much effort he’ll put into this next pivotal performance.
Thunderbolts*is currently set for theatrical release on July 29, 2025.
