Summary
July 21, 2025 officially marked the first anniversary of Insomiac Games’Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which continues the overarching narrative of the first game and the series' spin-off title,Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Despite the hype bullet train the sequel was on ahead of its release and the general praise it received from critics,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2eventually proved to be a bit more divisive than it was initially perceived to be, largely due to its handling of the story. However, two days after the game’s anniversary, that divisiveness is among the least of any concerns aboutMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, as its future ahead of the series' third and final installment has largely been laid to waste.
Marvel’s Spider-Manleft a lasting mark on the industry when it launched in 2018, quickly becoming recognized as one of the best superhero games ever made. Just a little over a month later, the game’sThe City That Never Sleeps story expansionwas released, providing players with even more content to enjoy. Unfortunately,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2has been an entirely different story, neglecting to release any substantial DLC for the game, even into its first anniversary. Now, despite numerous leaks and rumors aboutMarvel’s Spider-Man 2DLC, as well as the game itself seemingly setting up potential post-launch content, Insomniachas officially confirmedthere is no further story content planned for the game, leaving quite a few loose ends untied.
The news that no further story content is planned forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is tied to a recent blog post stating that the gamewill be ported to PCs.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Lack of DLC Is Disappointing
Carnage DLC Was Heavily Hinted at in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
One of the most obvious prospects forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2DLC can actually be found within the game itself and doesn’t require any leak or rumor to increase its credibility.“The Flame” is a line of missions inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2that sees Peter Parker partnering with Yuri Watanabe (Wraith) to take down a dangerous cult known as “The Flame.” At the end of the questline, players are greeted by who is presumably Cletus Kassady, the face behind the iconicSpider-Manvillain Carnage.
Naturally, it was initially deduced thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2would be receiving Carnage DLC at some point, though the unfortunateDecember 2023 Insomniac leaksuggested Carnage is a villain in the developer’s leaked Venom game instead. Miles also has a Carnage-themed suit inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and with his comic book history as a host for Carnage, it serves as an even greater indication thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2could have featured Carnage as a villain in DLC at some point. However, with the recent announcement that no DLC is planned forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, that story is left wide open.
Beetle and Spider-Verse DLC Was Potentially Leaked
Just months after the leak that revealed a potential Venom game on its way from Insomniac, another leak divulged information about possibleMarvel’s Spider-Man 2DLC involving Beetleand the Spider-Verse. In the list of projects that were leaked, these two were indicated as “Beetle Invasion” and “Spider-Verse Anomaly.” With little more than that to work with, and assuming the leak is accurate, Beetle might have made its way intoMarvel’s Spider-Man 2,and a Spider-Verse might also have been introduced in some capacity.
As rumors of these DLCs are simply based on leaks, they are less imperative than the Carnage story thatMarvel’s Spider-Man 2set up.
What makesMarvel Spider-Man 2’s lack of DLCmost worrisome is that attempting to fit Carnage, Beetle, and the Spider-Verse into the thirdMarvel’s Spider-Mangame, along with Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and potentially Hobgoblin, could bloat it and recreate aSpider-Man 3problem — which arguably suffered from having too many subplots. At the very least, hopefully, Insomniac plans to close up the Carnage storyMarvel’s Spider-Man 2introduced and simply cancel any others it had planned. It just may be challenging to do this in the leaked Venom game instead of the third mainline installment of the series, since Peter and Miles are now so closely connected to the Flame, but fitting Carnage intoMarvel’s Spider-Man 3could also feed a subplot problem.
