The Grim Effigy Reaper Epic skin from theOverwatch 2Season 13 Battle Pass is designed over hisOverwatchmodel, instead of the one from the sequel. This is seemingly the first timeOverwatch 2has released a new skin based on a hero’s original model, rather than their updated version.
Recently,Overwatch 2launched its 13th seasonal update. Titled Spellbinder,Season 13 brought with it a refresh to theOverwatch 2Battle Pass, featuring tons of witch-themed cosmetics for players to collect. Fans who purchase the Premium Battle Pass and reach Tier 50 will earn Grim Effigy Reaper – a new Epic skin rendering the Talon assassin with a goat skull reminiscent of a Leshen from TheWitcher 3.
However, oneOverwatch 2player noticed an interesting detail about this particular Reaper skin. Rather than being created over hisOverwatch 2design, Grim Effigy Reaper uses hisOverwatch 1model as a base instead, noticeable by the armor plates on his legs, thicker shotgun cartridges, extra belts, and other subtle details. According toOverwatch 2fan PANSHOE, who discovered this and shared side-by-side comparisons on Reddit, no othernew Epic Reaper skins fromOverwatch 2seem to do so, nor do those of any other hero, making Grim Effigy the first of its kind.
Grim Effigy Reaper Uses His Overwatch 1 Model
It is hard to say exactly whyOverwatch 2chose to model Grim Effigy Reaperoff of hisOverwatch 1design. It could be that the skin was actually made years ago, before hisOverwatch 2model was finished, and is only just now being released to the public. Alternatively, the bone-like mask, leg plates, and other details from his old model may have allowed the Grim Effigy theme to translate better than his more streamlinedOverwatch 2design. Either way, considering Epic skins consist of recolors and small tweaks, the use of an old model for this design is a noteworthy oddity.
Overwatch 2fans were curious about this occurrence as well. Some suggested the artist who made the skin could have been given the wrong model when creating it, but thatOverwatch 2stuck with it anyway. Few players are upset about it, however, as many prefer the originalmodels fromOverwatch 1to theirOverwatch 2counterpartsin certain cases. In either sense, most players agreed all of Reaper’s Epic skins tend to be very cool, and that Grim Effigy is not an exception.
