Summary

An artisticPokemonfan has drawn some interesting new designs for Geodude and its entire evolutionary line. Geodude, Graveler, and Golem have been mainstay Rock types in thePokemonfranchise ever since the first games were released in the late ’90s, and the fan-made redesigns preserve their boulder-like features while adding more stony details.

Rock-type Pokemon are among the best defensive fighters in the games, especially early on, when wild encounters are less likely to use super-effective Water and Steel moves to break through their defenses. While the Geodude line isn’t generally counted among thebest Rock-types inPokemon, its legacy dating back to Generation 1 has endeared it to a lot of long-time fans of the franchise.

As shared on thePokemonsubreddit, user necrovvi’s designs seem to focus on the Geodude line’s dual Rock and Ground types, throwing in some extra earthy brown and red tones to accent the Pokemons' original gray-based color schemes. Each stage in the evolutionary line has also received some additional craggy features jutting from their heads or backs. The three dark, stony ridges atop the redesigned Geodude’s head are similar in a way to theAlolan Geodude regional variantintroduced inPokemon Sun and Moon, though the head adornments in the fan-made images are fewer, wider, and bulkier than in the Pokemon’s Rock and Electric-type variant.

Geodude’s Line Gets Fan-Made Redesigns

One particular feature of these designs that commenters seemed to appreciate was the transition the artist made from Graveler to Golem. In the mid-stage evolution, Graveler gains an additional set of arms in the games when it evolves from Geodude, butevolving Graveler to Golemcauses it to somehow lose the extra set of limbs, a problem that these redesigns fix. In the comments section, the artist singled out problems with Golem’s original design specifically, noting that it needs “a little extra spice to compete with other rock types.”

The artist who created the three new designs didn’t limit their creative vision to just the Geodude line. A quick perusal of their Reddit account shows bespoke images of Pokemon in a variety of artistic styles, from pop art and anthropomorphized members of their nuzlocke teams to tiny Snorlax and Gyarados. While they’ve only been sharing redesigns for about two weeks, the user has already covered the Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Gastly, Dratini, and Poliwag lines. Each set of redesigns adds new elements to reinforce the Pokemons' most memorable stats or types, with the Dratini line getting feathery features akin to the flyingdragon inThe Secret of Manaand Polywhirl accenting its Fighting-type with a more lean figure.
